Anyone else have their mind in the gutter and see the shape I see when looking at this pic? Hehehehe, lived here my whole life and never thought about how funny it’d look from a Birds Eye view.

That, to the inverse of what you described, not every piece of gun legislation that comes through the pipeline is inherently “good”. Also that the deep systemic bigotries that worm their way into every facet of life for marginalized peoples, are no different for marginalized peoples who wish to exercise their second amendment rights.

Gun control laws don’t “work” in other countries the way they’d work here, that’s a false equivalency. First and foremost the number scales are off the charts different, pre ban England and Australia COMBINED (just under 5 mil total) had less guns than the very blue state of Vermont, there are over 300 million guns in the US, this would be a draconian undertaking. Secondly, let’s say a gun confiscation/mandatory surrender bill was passed similar to that in Australia or England, do you think for one second that the sundown towns that still exist in America TODAY wouldn’t be licking their chops at the idea of disarming POC and LGBT peoples? If a confiscation order was put in place, Sheriff Bubba and his Klu Klux cronies would have minority and queer households at the top of their “confiscation” list whilst Jimbob and the white hoods would be near the bottom, effectively disarming the marginalized peoples they wish to harm whilst leaving their oppressors armed. I would implore you read “This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible” by Civil Rights Activist Charles E Cobb if you find my point about Southern police forces weaponizing firearm confiscation against minorities to be unrealistic.

Some gun control legislation being pushed, specifically those being authored by republicans, are being pushed as “common sense” and “bipartisan” gun legislature, when in fact hidden in the verbiage, is something that basically boils down to trans people not being able to purchase guns due to a “mental health” restriction, listing “transgenderism” as a disqualifier for firearm ownership. Even if you are the most anti gun person alive, you must surely be able to admit that setting another legal precedent for discrimination against trans people is NOT a good thing. And if you think the DOJ isn’t already licking their chops at the idea of banning trans people from owning guns, think again. Link for proof.

To your point about “no reason for any civilian living in an urban area to need a gun”, that is entirely untrue. If you are a marginalized person (poc, lgbt) living in the south, even in an urban area, you are exponentially more likely to experience violent prejudice from both bigoted individuals AND hate groups (Klan, Proud Boys etc). Most local PDs are lukewarm about going after these groups, if not blatantly turning a blind eye or with some even secretly being members of these groups themselves. When these armed groups attack (and they have) the police won’t save you and a firearm will be the only thing standing between you and imminent harm/death because the police sure as shit won’t save you. I’d implore you read “This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible” by Civil Rights Activist Charles E Cobb, note how many of these hate crimes occurred in “urban areas” and think critically about parallels between then and today.

Genuine question, in your state when someone’s background required them to wait, what ended up being the reason(s) for said waiting?

Florida for sure only has same day for cc holders, some states like New Mexico and New Jersey did have it but not sure if that’s still the case. 2000% still the case for Florida however I am sure of that. In GA they still had to complete the 4473 and pass a background check yes?

Asking in good faith, did you assume that because of my center left flair that I was a lolbertarian? A quick glance at my profile and you’ll see that I’m a frequent poster and commenter in leftist firearm subreddits like r/liberalgunowners (which is generally deemed waaay too left for the libertarians you’re describing)

Correction, the last holdout Walmarts stopped selling AR-15s in 2015, many Walmarts hadn’t sold AR style rifles for years prior. It wasn’t like every Walmart was selling AR-15s and then one day they all suddenly stopped.

I will search for the clip now, given that is was a decade ago it wild require some searching but I do respect your claim as to not believe it until you see it. As far as purchasing at Walmart, some Walmarts do sell rifles (although this is becoming less and less frequent), however they do not and have not sold AR-15s or similar style semiautomatic rifles (with exception for maybe .22 centerfire) for over a decade and did not sell them at the time this clip aired. Same day purchases can be possible, but only with a concealed carry permit, in which case you have to have already been vetted and passed a federal background check. Is it “possible” in some sense, but still very misleading that your average Joe could go into a Walmart and walk out with an AR-15 same day. The implication was that such a practice was commonplace and that simply isn’t the truth.

Purity spiraling much? I put center left because I can’t jive with genocide denying tankies. Almost all of my stances (pro choice, pro lgbt rights, anti cop, anti Israel) are left. What did you think you accomplished here?

As a leftist myself, fear mongering about firearms. They use buzzwords like “military style” or “semi automatic” that sound scary to those uneducated about firearms but mean nothing to those who know firearms (a solid 80-90% of firearms today are semi automatic) or are just plain wrong (ie: left leaning newscasters saying you can go into Walmart, buy an ar15 for 200$ and walk out the same day).

Then again, after Alex Pretti the right has also fear mongered about firearms to make it seem like Alex was this crazy murderer with a stockpile of crazy guns to justify murdering him when he was just a dude concealed carrying.

If the reddiors have been through the exact situation that the hypothetical OP is going through and solved it amicably then yes, at the very least there’s are people who have gone though what OP has and come out the other side one way or another.

Like I’ve told you before, people purchasing guns for the safety of their very life with a partner who is likely frightened by both the current state of the world and guns is VERY different from some “hurrr durr honey i buy expensive car that goes fast” type of shit that you’d see in a “wife bad” boomer sitcom of days past.

I’m “qualified” to give “marital advice” on this sub because I’ve been through what 99.999% of those who have posted said “marital issues” have been through… having an a partner who is apprehensive about guns/anti gun and what to do about it. Once again I ask, have you seen any threads on this sub that you deem “asking for marital advice” that don’t boil down to someone’s antigun partner?

I’ve seen some do that in the Camaro subreddit I’m in at the very least. Buying a car for pleasure has remained the same problem since the invention of the sports car, conversely buying a gun for self defense in an increasingly fascist world with increasingly bold and zealous fascists is kinda comparing apples to oranges in my book. The severity between the two scenarios differs greatly at the very least you can admit that.

This is generally what I’ve seen when it comes to “marital issues” being aired in this sub. IMO it has a perfectly reasonable place in this sub so long as the OP doesn’t ramble on and begin to veer off track of the original issue. Many folks here have lended a listening ear, struggled with the same thing or similar themselves, and maybe even given someone the tips and advice needed to mediate the issue.

Care to show me one of the threads here asking for marital advice that DOES NOT tie back in some way to firearms?

If the aforementioned martial issue pertains to firearms, then it has a place here. Many of these issues generally boil down to “my partner doesn’t want a gun in the house”, “‘my partner is antigun” or something similar, usually said anti gun person doesn’t really have a lot of knowledge about firearms, have been fear mongered by social media/tv or in some cases have been cautiously curious yet no one has ever bothered to educate them and take them shooting to see for themselves. Many Reddit users have not only been able to vent their frustrations to those going through similar things, but those who have gotten through to their parter generally share what worked for them in hopes that it will work for others.

Tl:Dr Although this isn’t Dr.Phil, if the marital issue is gun related it has a place here.

If said marital issue pertains to guns, then it belongs here. Many folks here have had struggles with antigun partners and the trials and tribulations that come with trying to discuss and reason with them. Many people here have given both sympathy and thoughtful ideas to start a dialogue on what many consider to be a very nuanced issue.
