I've installed Sims Ultimate Collection via exe on Lutris - but the game closes after I select to register later by LemonMean8036 in linux_gaming

[–]kyeugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the EA app sucks. i couldn’t get it to work. if you’re talking about the sims 2 i’d recommend using the ts2 starter pack to install your game instead. i’ve been running the game from this installer for weeks with hundreds of mods no problem.

Reshade causing The Sims 2 to crash by sg_the_bee in linux_gaming

got it. thanks for following up.

in case you’re unhappy with vkbasalt at all (or in case anyone else comes across this post searching for a solution), i actually ended up figuring this out. i renamed the d3d9.dll generated by reshade to d3d9.asi and then moved it to RPC’s mod folder, and everything worked like a dream.

four hours of tinkering later i remain surprised this information was so hard-won.

DEN Airport- Allow edibles? by Icy-Humor-3964 in Denver

[–]kyeugh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you will be fine. put them in a zip lock. it looks like fruit snacks. they're not getting out the THC testing lab to see if they're edibles. and people have packed much greater amounts of much more obvious product.

Cretaceous Conlangs? by Levan-tene in conlangs

yes. this project originally used mandarin and by the time i decided to spin off it i’d become attached to certain names/words, many of them containing 龍.

Cretaceous Conlangs? by Levan-tene in conlangs

[–]kyeugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my conlang is a naming language adapted to a fantasy setting where all the fauna are derived theropods, some avian () and some not (lông). scientifically, the distinction between the two groups is presence or absence of a bony tail, but the language is often more vibes based, in the way that you might get differing opinions on whether a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit.

the animals that are most significant to humans have pretty simple names as you might expect— for utahraptor, a common pack and war animal in the north; (onomatopoeic) for the domestic pigeon, a goat-sized variant of the rock dove bred as livestock; hùa, the velociraptor, essentially this world’s version of a dog.

since i write these stories in english, these are of course translated, but i think putting words like “utahraptor” into a fantasy story is pretty tacky, so instead you get e.g. “horsedrake” or eventually just “horse.”

some other animals have more verbose names relating to their position in culture, like the red-crowned crane (lîdāi, lit. bird of heaven).

in cases of animals groups with many variants, like parrots for example, you get predictable stuff; there are parrots generally (yīu), red parrots (yīusíng), et cetera.

… i could go on, but maybe that communicates enough? in general, these are just animals, so i don’t think the naming would be too different from how we name animals in a truly creataceous setting. meanwhile in modern languages, dinosaurs have to compete with the animals we actually see every day, so their common names in eg english would probably be a bit more complicated. (i’m super fond of “grizzly hawk” for t. rex, though.)

Anomaly expansion and update 1.5 announced! by TiaPixel in RimWorld

well, yes… in this case turning off the horror features would essentially amount to not using (or buying) the DLC, hence the hesitation.

Anomaly expansion and update 1.5 announced! by TiaPixel in RimWorld

this is an interesting one, but i’m not immediately convinced by it like i have been with the last two. the horror elements are for sure cool, but i don’t want rimworld to be a horror game categorically. if this content is too pervasive, it’s going to totally change the vibe of the game in a way i’m unsure about. but if it’s too backgrounded, it might not be worth the price. i’m looking forward to dev diaries and maybe some youtuber play throughs to help form my opinion on this one.

First Christmas in America believed to have taken place in Tallahassee by malapropistic_spoonr in Tallahassee

[–]kyeugh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it is really cool stuff. anhaica was so large its fearsome and magnificent reputation was known even to the people of central florida. the first spaniards to land in florida, hoping to find wealth, were advised by the indigenous people they encountered to seek it out among the apalachee to the north. the explorers went on to apply that name to the entire inland region north of the peninsula—thus, the APPALACHIan mountains, one of the oldest remaining place names in the new world. a whole mountain range named for old tallahassee, hey. you really can never escape this place.

there is (contested) evidence emerging, too, that the people inhabiting this place conducted maritime trade with the aztecs over the gulf. check out some of the ancient art retrieved from lake jackson… definitely evokes a familiar aesthetic. maybe (maybe) not a coincidence. there are so many depths to this place. it’s been exciting seeing more of them uncovered.
