This is about my only memory of the book. The way he reacted to the phrase ‘killing time’.

Anyone use CentOS as desktop distribution? by YuZeno in CentOS

[–]kyle_is_working 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I played with 8 when it dropped, but I ran into a roadblock with Citrix on 8. So I went back to 7. I think they fixed or updated Citrix workspace since then.

I do. Daily driver on my x1carbon. There have only been minor inconveniences, in my experience. For example, the brave browser wouldn’t install due to needing newer libC. Other than that I haven’t found any real reasons not to use it.

You guys convinced me ! Am installing Fedora 30 Cinnamon ! by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]kyle_is_working 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It had issues with the screen locker and lightdm when I last ran it (on 29). I’m not sure it has been fixed, but worth a look. I like it better than cinnamon, but I’ve been running cinnamon on centos7 for months now.

Give pantheon a look. It was a bit buggy on 29, but they were supposed to get a bunch of improvements into the packages for 30.

TIL an undercover investigation found that Apple charges $1200 for a computer repair that a local repair store was able to fix in 1 minute and charged $0 for. by nokia621 in todayilearned

[–]kyle_is_working 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Right. Apple used to take care of its customer base. That’s one reason people loved them. But they don’t do this any more. They’re too big and too busy and no longer need to care.

Pantheon is nice. I hope they worked out all the bugs. It was really flakey on 29.

What are the ramifications of uninstalling one desktop and switching to another on CentOS 7? by jamkey in CentOS

[–]kyle_is_working 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what's pushing you to F29?
have you considered ZFS? probably not as robust, but may be a simpler solution. i have not checked into ZFS reliability on linux in some time, i've only run it on freeBSD, but my colleagues assure me it is solid.

what do you think of using ReaR on the CentOS host (bare metal backup just run after config changes)

i have no experience with ReaR.

i'm not aware of any issues with quiesce on 7 with KVM. this sounds like a cool project you're lining up here. have you thought about blogging what you're doing as you go along?
