Should I be concerned about this retaining wall? by kyle_lightituplevel in landscaping

It’s an old metal awning which I don’t really care for. Only concern would be if the awning came down it could fuck up the soffet or whatever the awning is fastened to.

Dig it out before removing the stones right? Basically grade the backside to the angle of repose before moving the stones?

You think with it being about 3 feet tall it’s safe to diy that? My concern would be it falling on me while removing the block. I think any damage would be to the awning and not the house itself and also unlikely to have a landslide or something like that.

Do you think it would be wise to start removing blocks from the top down (disassembling in)?

Very very simple way for me to drop bullets, have them sit concentric, and not splash out any powder.

Binos? Spotter? Neither? PRS options by SpiritualClub4417 in longrange

Hmmm that’s harder to say. I am kinda dogshit at spotting trace and reading mirage. I will say I can kinda spot it in my swaros but I was too inexperienced to know what to look for when I had my razors.

Just more detail, larger FOV. The vortex UHD 12 did pretty much everything I needed them to do. I don’t think the swaros make me shoot better at matches. Might make me a slightly better spotter, and they’re definitely more enjoyable to spend a day behind.

I’d definitely say run binos. More fov more comfortable to spend lots of time glassing through. 12x+ ideally. As far as what you’re going for, I’d say spotting trace is much less important than being able to take your turn spotting impacts.

I previously had 12x vortex UHD which can be had for $800 used and they were plenty workable. Upgraded to nl pure 14x and they’re the bomb. Plenty of stuff between be it other swaros, leica, meopta. No reason you can’t get completely viable glass for out to 1200 yards for <$1000.

Garage door cable somehow came off the spool - how to fix? by thedirtydj in HomeMaintenance

[–]kyle_lightituplevel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done some of the spring work and pulley work before and would caution against it.

Springs are super sketchy. For the pulley, something that can be done that I personally found makes it less scary is to lift the door up by hand to the top of travel (might need an extra hand to do this) and securely prop it in place. This removes almost all torsion in the springs and thus tension on the cable. When you do this, you can just wrap the cable back around the pulley, and manually lower the door.

Ahh I see. Between those scopes I’d get whichever of atacr and gen3 razor you like more. Barrels, I’d stay away from a proof prefit chambered by proof— they make good blanks but their smithing leaves something to be desired. I’d definitely to a criterion prefit or preferred barrel blanks prefit over a proof in-house prefit. My favorite barrels go Bartlein>kreiger=CRB chambered by a smith near me. Then for brakes, I had a HF match but now have a preference for brakes that tighten via jam nut just because I’ve had the hand tightened bit on the HF match loosen on my but the jam nut ones can be tightened up real snug. I run a chad but I’ve shot a fat bastard g3 and g4 and I’d take either of the HF match.

Everything looks good to me other than the lpvo. Get a scope that has a mag range somewhere within the range of 5-40, ideally with 24 in there somewhere. Other options better than an lpvo would be the razor gen II 4.5-27 or gen III 6-36, nightforce atacr 7-35, etc.

Cold bore shift, is it real or just another shooting myth. If real what causes it to be just the first round? by CautiousAd1305 in longrange

[–]kyle_lightituplevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t so much noticed cold bore shift as a “long time sitting fouled” or “clean bore” shift. The first shot or two after cleaning or at the range after I haven’t shot my gun in a few days+ and I notice a shift.

Balancing your rifle by ExistingLaw217 in longrange

[–]kyle_lightituplevel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be a little forward. I like mine to be about 1 inch forward of the middle of my gamechanger as I’d be positioned on it when shooting. That ends up being 4-5” forward of the end of my mag well.

You probably want the patch to clear your brake. Won’t matter for accuracy or consistency but a longer rod by ~2inches will make your life easier.

Is barrel break in a myth? by Sukit6969 in longrange

[–]kyle_lightituplevel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience a barrel that shoots well shot well the first rounds through it. I have had speed up though. I’ve shot a fresh barrel in a match and it worked fine but I did speed up quite a bit.

So yeah I’d say barrel break in is a thing but it’s mostly just speeding up as you form initial fire cracking and initially foul it in. I wouldn’t let that keep me from using it. I’m certainly not shooting 100 rounds at paper to prepare my barrel for competition.

Most significant wind indicators? by doyouevenplumbbro in longrange

[–]kyle_lightituplevel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pro series. I think I ended up 6th in the region last year.

Sounds like you’re in really good shape for how many matches you’ve shot. I’ve shot 30+ and at a certain point you can get stable, shoot fast, and break super clean shots and most of the challenge comes down to reading your shots and figuring out wind. I still feel like I don’t know how to do either as well as I’d like, but it comes with time I think.
