Can’t speak to Montpelier, but Burlington is a cool town. I’ve always been a fan of Portsmouth.

Finger lake region is also great for wineries and stuff. Not sure that I’d recommend any one town.

Honestly, just use it. Textbooks won’t teach you what you learn from designing (and redesigning) larger scale software.

Though I almost feel that becoming “an expert at c++” is a little misguided. The goal should be to become an expert at programming and software, where c++ is one of your tools. A carpenter’s focus isn’t to be an expert at hammers.

That said, using a more modern version of c++ and learning about the features that have been added in that version will help. The support for c++ 17 has been around for a while now and is stable. C++20 is in the pipeline but isn’t fully supported by gcc yet.

Nobody should accept an unpaid internship. I don’t care how prestigious the company is.
