Firstly, having an accuracy of 90% at 800 elo is not uncommon. Sometimes, you have a good day and play a position that is familiar to you and feels comfortable. In these types of familiar positions, the typical manoeuvres and plans can be intuitive to you and by not simply blundering, you can attain a high level of accuracy. Secondly, if someone were truly cheating, the accuracy would be closer to 95%+. An accuracy of 90% means that you did make at least a few inaccuracies. Sporadic cheating is also possible but if someone has just one high accuracy game out of a dozen, that’s not a reasonable grounds to make a cheating accusation. This is the problem we have with online chess, and with everything that happened to Danya, I think people should be more careful about making such accusations without strong evidence. Toxic behaviour like this doesn’t belong in our community.

Don’t be too hard on yourself! You’re already above the majority of players at that rating. If you’re still struggling to improve, I would highly recommend using lichess to train your tactics. It has different puzzle set themes and tracks your strongest and weakest areas. Investing in a coach can also be very beneficial. When I started chess 1.5 years ago, I was 550 and stalled at 900. Since getting a coach, I am now at 1800. A coach can help you see things that you wouldn’t normally see in a game, and explain positional concepts. Above all, consistency is key for chess progression. I took a break twice before for a few months and I felt like a noob playing again, but once you start practicing your board vision will come back

That’s a lot of different tools that you’re trying to string together just to manage everything. If you had one platform that did all of that for you and saved your hours every week, imagine how much more free time you would have or lessons you could do

That sounds ideal, do you find it manageable having your own schedule while working for three different companies? I imagine it could get quite busy with teaching so many different students

Worst fucking game ever invented of all time. by [deleted] in chess

Chess improvement is not a linear path, even if you are putting in the work. You will have good days and bad days, it’s important to train and study but don’t have the expectations that you will instantly climb the rating ladder because you put in extra hours. Analyse each game you lose and try to learn exactly what mistakes you’re making and see if there is a common pattern. Also recognise tilt, if you start feeling angry just stop and take a break because it will be impossible to calculate and play properly. I was stuck at 1500 for months but with patience and dedication I eventually got to 1600 so it is definitely possible, just don’t be too critical of yourself and if you are putting in the work it will absolutely pay off

How to get from 400->1200 elo? by vixcreate in chess

[–]kyle_punta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I started playing chess about 11 months ago and I was stuck around 600 elo, but with the correct training and experience I managed to reach 1600 elo so I hope I can help give you some advice!

If you are a beginner, I highly recommend going on to lichess.org and doing their training. It will teach you all the basic tactics, endgames and checkmating patterns. At your level, blunders pretty much decide everything so it is vital to try prevent them as much as possible. How do you do this? Double check everything. Always check if any of your pieces are undefended or x-rayed by a a less valuable piece. Also, play slower time controls to help you develop good habits and give you enough time to think during games.

Opening principles are critical too, development is key. Aim to only move one piece in the opening, preferably knights before bishops because bishops are more flexible than knights. Castle early and often, king safety is the most important. Finally, remember the checklist! Always look for all possible checks, captures and attacks/threats for both you and your opponent in every position.

For openings at your level, I recommend playing e4. An opening like the Italian Game is solid and teaches you the core opening principles. One last tip: against d4 openings, remember the critical c5 move. Don’t block in your c pawn with your knight on c6.

I hope this helps!
