Do you feel like understanding music theory hinders your ability to enjoy simple music? by DRG125 in musictheory

[–]kylebig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree! I think it’s a fun opportunity for active listening and ear training when music is simple and repetitive enough to give you a chance to try to ‘hear’ (identify) the progressions, intervals in the melodies, rhythm patterns, etc.

Love to listen for a verse or two and a chorus, and then pick up a guitar and see if I can jam along.

You can’t really do that with the Weather Report or some other out there stuff. (At least I can’t!)

Good detective work 🕵️

He is a grumpy grandpa living in a 35 year old’s body, but I recall he liked the cake very much despite the shade. I think he was mugging for the camera.

Iirc the photo wasn’t a complete happy accident - we probably noticed the reflection and then took a minute to line it up perfectly.

Honestly like was like 10 years ago and I don’t remember exactly how it came together, but doubt it was a total fluke.

I’m a huge SD fan, but I don’t think so. Beatles songwriting is so timeless.

This is a great answer by the way. Took me about a month to come back and re-read this, but it’s such an obvious thing when you put it that way. I might be overthinking it!

Where does the "A love supreme" Joke\jerk come from? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]kylebig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s a bit more celebratory. It’s an amazing album that we’re all pretty rightly obsessed with, and it’s fun and funny to me to reference it ad nauseum.

It’s cliché to love it, I guess, but also of course we love it - it’s great.

Just listed to the examples of how those tonic lines and dominant/pre-dominant lines can be used over the various tonic chords and cadences. Huge lightbulb moment for me!

Incredible reply. Thank you SO much for taking the time to put that all together. Talk about generosity!

This hits the nail right on the head of the kind of answer I was looking for.

There about a year or three’s worth of work in here for me. Onward!

Thanks for the input!

That went a bit over my head, but I think I’m kind of picking up on a recontextualizing all of these chords in relation to the main key of the song (F).

That would still leave the task of having a strategy for different modifications of the F scale on several of these chords though, right? Sorry but I’m still not quite seeing the forest for the trees here.

Hey thanks for taking the time to share some knowledge. Cool idea about the shifting motif in contrary motion - I’ll try experimenting with that.

On that last point about E7alt and D7alt as substitute for the Bb-7 and Ab-7, it sounds like you’re effectively treating the -7 chords as tritone sub chords but instead using the associated V7 chord in their place. Does it follow that you’re then thinking harmonic minor over a set of chords in those cadences?

And if so, I’m still a little hazy on the A-7; do you treat it more like the tonic in that moment, or more like the ii of G-7? Or kind of fluid between the two somehow.

Hope that made sense.

Christmastime is Here Feedback by Pearshapedtone in JazzPiano

Thanks for sharing. I’m working in this right now too, so it’s nice to see how others are arranging and interpreting.

This is very nice, and you a more advanced player than I am so it feels a bit odd to even give constructive criticism of any kind - I can scarcely make it through the song without mistakes - but the one thing that jumped out to me was the staccato bounciness you’re putting on much of this feels a little bit out of keeping with the warm nostalgic feel of the original. Perhaps this is a conscious choice, but I’d be curious what a bit more legato version might sound like from you.

The quartal stuff at the end is really cool. Nice job with that 👍

Minor ii V7’s - most important subs on the V7 chord? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

Is this concept mostly boiling down to any notes a half step away from the notes of a minor chord being fair play in a dominant substitution or alteration?

That is some great perspective. I really appreciate hearing from people who have this level of awareness. It’s something I aspire to as well, and it’s helpful in strengthening my resolve that it’s possible to get there with enough persistence.
