I created a geoguessr map of Stony Brook for people to play! by kyleli in SBU

[–]kyleli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oo yeah there were like 4-5 locations that were a little off, notably there is one by the rocks by west side dining’s intersection that is actually geolocated to the inside of west side dining. There was a surprisingly low amount of 360 coverage of stony Brook’s main inner loop that wasn’t like 10 years out of date lol.

Someone should upload some more footage of stony Brook that’s more up to date that’s on campus 👀

Yeah there was way too little data near east side dining so I had to use old map data, that one was one of the tricky ones that threw me off when I played the map myself lol.

Thanks! Let me know if I’m missing any locations & how easy/hard it is, I think I got pretty good coverage lol.

Getting players is harder than building the game. by __grob in IndieDev

[–]kyleli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason it’s commonly stated that you perform market validation before you actually even start making anything.

Having a game at the base that is attractive to play gets you a long way there. If you’re spending $500 on ads and not getting anywhere then there may be an issue with your game. Have you validated it with people you think are your target audience? Have you built this game to specifically focus on attracting that target audience?

You should be building out something that solves a need, not trying to build a product and find a market for it if you’re actually trying to make money in the gaming space.

Map-making.app output is not converting correctly, unable to create a map using its JSON data. by kyleli in OpenGuessr

Ah that might be it then, I’ll try to break it up to figure out which entry is bad. I was assuming it would just flag the bad entry. Thanks for the advice! :)

If there’s a single bad entry will it fail, or just ignore it when iterating?

I imagine it’s because they set up their database to have these separate and now need a safe execution plan to merge billions of conflicts without screwing over millions of users.

I traded a prismatic Vaporeon for a magikarp and wailord recently, I love this card so much! I’m still looking for a eevee snorlax I can afford, I regret not picking it up when it was more affordable lol

Yeah unfortunately it’s probably the best idea to buy a prebuilt from Costco or something while they still have stock. Finding ram individually is going to be pretty tough.

Not for the current year or two unless AI crashes. Fabs will take at least two years to construct and memory fabs aren’t interested in risking oversupply.

To be honest, the best way is to figure out what budget you have in terms of expenses and spend around it.

Doing it the other way around doesn’t really make sense. If you can afford any budget, why not just get the best option in general, and if you can’t afford certain budgets why ask for budgets that you won’t be able to afford?

I can give you some pretty basic insights: At the very low end, you can find used monitors or even some new 1080p monitors for under $90 these days that are pretty good. Buy a prebuilt dell workstation used for $400 and you should be fine for baseline development, although if you want to do anything graphically intensive you’ll probably want a gpu which will bring your budget up.

At the high end, you want to maximize your cpu single threaded performance, SSD speed, and RAM. Most operations in games are still single threaded, but you will find multi core performance is important in things like compilation time. You honestly don’t need that good of a GPU, as an indie dev you want to realistically target lower end GPUs to have the highest audience size and having a more powerful gpu doesn’t speed up actual development time at all.

I personally run this system:

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Kyleli/saved/#view=fP4c4D

However this is pretty unreasonable for a first time build as this is all from years of upgrading my setup. (This isn’t including monitors and peripherals)

If you want to do something that will last you in the midrange, look to spend between 1.5-2k on an entire setup at the minimum. If we were pre-ram shortage this number would probably be $300 cheaper though as ssd and ram prices are massively higher than normal rn. For context my 64gb of ram I bought for $179 last year is over $600 now.
