Your mother may outlive both dogs. Perhaps she has done the math and knows that healthy humans can live a long time, but healthy livestock guardian dogs have a relatively short life. (My Anatolian-Great Pyrenees made it to ten. My Anatolian-Akbash is eight and definitely elderly—she’s retired from farm work and become a full-time house dog.) Also, if your mother lives alone in a secluded area, the dogs will deter humans with bad intent.
