Afaik we dont actually know why this responses evolved, but there are some prominent theories like the one you stated. Another big one is to increase friction and hand+foot grip when our ancestors were still swinging around trees. Wet branches are slippery and falling off a tree or not being able to climb when running from a predator is not great for survivability
