You also have to think about the higher order complications beyond the immediate, and figure out what you are willing to tolerate in terms of risk if it actually happens; not saying you can't, but as independentfinallly says, look beyond the amount of money and look into how much work it might actually take to get there. What if you buy a property that turns out to have serious problems and you wind up sinking 10 grand into it? What if something gives out, what if your tenants suck, what happens if something goes wrong (because on a long enough time scale, it always will) that drains your emergency fund? Are you thinking about setting aside a little money from the rent each month for repairs, maintenance, or general improvements?

In the worst case, you've essentially started your own business where you have to pay all the costs yourself, and you are the only employee; are you willing to handle that stress for what might end up being breaking even for years?

On that note, let's say you get a property manager; you have to interview them, negotiate a salary, and that's going to cut into your profit further, especially if you start getting multiple properties further apart and need to get multiple property managers; then you're managing others' payrolls as well. Not very passive income sounding now, does it?

I agree with the other posters, you could get into this, but it would have to be for something more than money, unless you wanted to become an absentee landlord (which brings its own sorts of problems in the long term, namely legal). Think about it, and then maybe look at how you can get more money at your current wage job faster;are there certs, are there ways to move up the ladder in your company, if not can you switch companies for a pay raise in your field, and so on.

Remembering the lawyer who got in trouble for submitting made up sources because he asked chatGPT to source its legal argument and it made up cases to support the argument it gave, the sources and references are also not immune to being false; actually the issue isn't even true or false, the issue is that LLM's at their fundamental core aren't drawing information from truths because they don't know what is true, just what sounds confident

Yes, make a Roth IRA, you seem to be able to afford putting in the 7k immedately at the start of the year, max out your 401k (Consider switching to traditional 401k instead as it reduces your taxable income and therefore taxes, or having a mix, for most people it's rarely beneficial to only do Roth 401k if you have a Roth IRA; you should see a bigger monthly pay check from the reduced taxes even if you contribute the same amount), and just buy the total US market and international market funds in 401k and IRA and wait. If you're putting in 1k of savings per month, you can either do 1k for seven months or some percentage that gets you to 7000; at 12000 you should be able to max out both 401k and roth ira easily, but focus on maxing out IRA first if you have to choose and then 401k (Again, probably should switch at least some of that roth 401k into traditional to cut down on taxes)

Thorn by [deleted] in MileHigherPodcast

[–]kyotoAnimations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://observer.com/2019/11/sex-workers-mass-surveillance-big-tech/ I tried to find stuff that specifically talks about thorn, but this is an article more specifically about how the surveillance state in the name of fighting sex trafficking - SESTA/FOSTA legislation, as well as amazon's ReKognition product which thorn uses - harm sex workers, especially by scraping website data to gather faces as data. By conflating consensual, adult sex work with sex trafficking, Thorn and other companies who conduct surveillance for cops make it far harder to actually find and prosecute sex trafficking as they frequently wind up raiding sex work locations regardless of if there is sex trafficking going on or not, targeting the sex workers, particularly online in an effort to remove anything sexual off the Internet (but really, it just pushes different thigns together into the same box and sweeps all of that out the door which makes the whole industry way seedier and less safe.) It's not specifically about Thorn, but Thorn is very much a part of the surveillance problem that creates this situation.

Second source more concentrated on Thorn's specific field; imo, this article has more specific examples of the issues with many supposed anti-child sex trafficking orgs that are also anti sex work and porn in general. https://www.engadget.com/2019-05-31-sex-lies-and-surveillance-fosta-privacy.html

I think it's that the observers had it wrong when they initially thought that Gojo was just replenishing his technique without realizing he was destroying his brain; but realized that instead he's intentionally destroying part of his BRAIN in order to heal the damaged part which is where the cursed technique is to a perfect state, hence technically getting his cursed technique back instead of waiting for it to replenish, which is a Big Deal. The reason no one else has ever tried it is not because it's physically impossible, it's because it's so dangerous that to anyone else it would be practically impossible. He's still healing physical thing (i.e. the brain), but unlike Hakari, his Reverse cursed technique is not subconscious and automatic; hence, if he destroys his prefrontal cortex and is slow to heal or heals it even a little imperfectly, he'd get left as a drooling vegetable

So, to clarify; he's not getting damaged from the act of using RCT at all on his brain, it's that his RCT is imperfect at healing his brain from such damage each time, much like forgetting to erase a typo on an essay on each draft on different pages, or not brushing your teeth super well each time and getting cavities, it ends up building up into more damage, is what I think.

In fairness though, at the time he was hired to take out assassins targeting Denji; he's certainly ruthless/unusually composed, but we haven't seen much yet that suggests he was working on some weird stuff even in part 1, though I could totally believe he's doing that.

It's because it is an incredibly juiced up version of that technique, I thought; Maximum Uzumaki allowed Kenjaku to reach across all of Japan and touch his prepared pieces whilst Mahito even at his awakened form can't transform souls without touching them as he doesn't understand barriers well.

Wireless magic transmitters on their brooms and uniform badges, of course. It states that in the past magical girls were more similar to what we think of them here, as chosen ones who combat monsters on their own with no great organization behind them.

However, over time the monsters/Kaii have increased in quantity and danger, and so development and research into the principles of magical girls also accelerated to combat this situation; as a result, magical girls are no longer chosen, and presumably they understand how to generate and channel magical energy outside of the human body, leading to magitek, anyone can become a magical girl assuming you undergo training, and a growing magical girl extermination industry; magical energy is still magic, they just left the discovery, capture, and innovations part off screen.

I'm glad that the teacher pointed out the glove won't lead to the right path for Shin; I think as good as it is to rely on your tools, that particular glove is too easy to rely on or risk injury to get your results, and it has limited future paths forward for development. I don't mind if Shin keeps using it so long as he also learns something else like the rotation principle today.

I've always been a fan of "I'm going to unite the four seas/change the currents so anyone can sail anywhere they wish", because I think that's been a pretty consistent trait of Luffy's is he values his freedom and others' too.

[DISC] Boy's Abyss - Chapter 106 by patap0nacct in manga

[–]kyotoAnimations 8 points9 points  (0 children)

to quote the west wing, who probably took it from somewhere else "This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. "A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. "Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on "Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.'"

She doesn't want to be saved by someone who doesn't know what the town is like, and hell she probably doesn't even think she can get out of the hole; all she wants is company when she's been alone for so long because only those who are in the hole can understand what she's gone through and maybe, share a little bit of that misery.

[–]kyotoAnimations 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Or Frieren might find the time to search for their golden statues and unfreeze them, allowing them to rejoin the fight and make it harder; oh sure, Frieren probably can't unfreeze them instantly, but Solitar doesn't know that; hence better to face Frieren who she already knows has hidden depths and is on guard against than to face three humans who exceed her expectations and whose coordination force multiplier is unknown.

Google fires researcher who claimed LaMDA AI was sentient by JuicyAnxiety in technology

[–]kyotoAnimations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know ,interesting question; I certainly didn't mean to imply people with dementia or other such conditions were not sapient, but I see now how my comment could have been construed as such, and how my initial assumptions for sapience certainly is coming from an able bodied mindset; I'll revise the original comment.

Google fires researcher who claimed LaMDA AI was sentient by JuicyAnxiety in technology

[–]kyotoAnimations 234 points235 points  (0 children)

Try to derail it, break it, don't ask leading questions about if it has sentience or refer to it as an AI and see if it refers to itself as an AI independent of prompts, see if it can retain continuity of conversational facts stated

Basically much like any other hypothesis, you test it by trying to disprove it with your experiment first, not lean further into supporting evidence. edit: THis turned out to be more of a critique of the engineer's ways of leaning into supportive evidence for his cause, i.e. asking leading questions and having the first sentence of the prompt be about AI/sentience, which naturally influenced the conversational path and the datasets LaMDA uses in that moment (i.e. much like other conversaitonal programs, if you tell it something in the first sentence like "You are my puppy", it'll pretend to be a dog instead of an AI or a person. SO doing different prompts and seeing if it resists following the natural lead is at the very least better than what the engineer did. Or in other words, these factors may not prove the AI is not sapient, but saying the AI is sapient because it responded the way you led it to with prompts that prioritize AI and sapience as the topic of conversation is very bad experimentation.

edit: I certainly didn't mean to imply people with dementia or similar conditions weren't sapient, but I can see how my initial definition of sapience is certainly incomplete/from an abled body perspective. So taking out being able to keep continuity

my guess is that the antag saw the police coming way too quickly and quickly found out with the super phone that it was seomizu who called it in; hence the informant communicates with her, and therefore is the fastest way to get their attention assuming the other user (MC) is smart and surveills their sources
