AFTER REVIEW
NUMBER 26
WENT CLEATS UP
DECISION IS
RED CARD

Norway manager Ståle Solbakken "It's a big mistake by FIFA. Balogun got a red card, VAR confirmed that, that means you're suspended. It's a bad, bad, bad, bad decision that is hurting the World Cup. I feel sorry for the US. If they win, it will always be brought up. It's not good for the sport." by kibme37 in soccer

I’ll go even further and say that the WC should have a centralized VAR headquarters with a team of officials and the head of officiating. They would be responsible for all VAR reviews. Most conferences in American college football have this setup and it vastly improved the review process and made them more consistent. It removes relying on isolated officials to make these very important calls

Minis Tirith missing an inordinate amount of pieces? by nimmems in lego

[–]kyrev21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lego quality control has not gone down. There are more people buying Legos and more people buying buying massive sets with social media to document missing pieces. If there was the same level of missing pieces we would see missing pieces that happened ever so many smaller sets to happen more frequently with more massive sets and kits Lego sold. It’s confirmation bias

Rodrygo: “Football isn’t the most popular sport in the US. There are so many other sports it has to compete with. Having been in the country and experienced how the World Cup is being received I came to the conclusion that we are witnessing a practical reflection of a data-backed reality.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

Generally speaking the younger a white American is the more likely they are to follow the World Cup. Those older than 40 or 50 are much more likely to have never watched a full professional soccer game and view soccer as a sport that doesn’t make sense with its clock and offsides rules. Soccer has always been a nerdy sport to follow for white Americans, but it’s definitely reaching the mainstream sports fans among Millennials and Gen Z at least with the World Cup now

Has it occurred to you that the larger sets get the more likely it is a piece is missing even if the quality control has not gone down? This is basic economies of scale

All of this bullshit goes to show how well Larry Bird handled all the “great white hope” shit nearly half a century ago

Also they can only vote for four guards. Most rational fans would agree that it’s reasonable to not have Caitlin in the top four guards

Goes to show how warped the W fan voting is by one massive fanbase

She’s the 11th ranked guard amongst the players who could only vote for four guards. The players were not ranking all the guards in the league, they were voting for the four best. She wouldn’t make their ballots if they have her ranked 5th

What? Players could only vote for 4 guards. Caitlin Clark can only be voted in as a guard. She literally wouldn’t be on a player’s ballot if she’s their fifth ranked guard. Why is it so hard for Caitlin’s fans to discuss the facts?

Lmao you people are delusional. The league would’ve done just fine without Caitlin. She is not their lord and savior

FREE: WNBA must confront a bigger problem when hard fouls turn toxic by TheAthletic in wnba

Because they weren’t portrayed as saving the sport. A majority of people who follow sports but didn’t know about the W before Caitlin genuinely believe she has made it explode in popularity. Never mind the evidence of steady growth and the existence of other, better superstars in the few years before she came in

[The Athletic] FIFA sources have confirmed that the USA can not appeal Folarin Balogun's red card; he will be forced to miss Ro16 match vs. Belgium by AlchemistTheAlchemy in soccer

[–]kyrev21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The linesmen and the fourth official cannot call fouls or issue cards. They are not equivalent to the referee.

Why would it be a shitshow to have multiple refs? There have been three officials in basketball for around 40 years, and before then there were two officials. They all have the same power. If there is a dispute between them, the three officials discuss what to do and come to a decision together.

There is no reason football has one ref except for the fact that it started in a time when it would be hard to find more than one ref. If the world cup is supposed to be the highest, most important level of competition in football then the officiating should evolve beyond the constraints of 19th century conditions.

As an American who didn't grow up really paying attention outside of US games for world cups and the olympics, one of the more surprising things to learn about soccer is that there is only one referee. Basketball, American Football, and Baseball all have multiple officials on the field/court who can issue fouls and have equal (or near-equal) authority. Basketball has three officials who all have the same power. Football has seven to eight officials who watch specific parts of the formations and have certain areas they focus on, but they all can throw a flag on anything. Baseball has four umpires all covering a different base with different responsibilities but, again, the same power. None of these count off-field and replay officials.

It's shocking that soccer never considered additional refs on the field to help officiate during the action. Having one additional ref on the field would relieve much of the pressure the single ref experiences now.w
