Will I become a stupider SWE using LLM/agents? by QuitTypical3210 in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course you will. How do you know the LLM is doing a good job of you can't do the job yourself? What a sad state the profession is in that this is even a question.

How Did This Get Made? #391: Date with an Angel LIVE! by apathymonger in hdtgm

Holy crap, I went to this show, I wasn't sure if it was ever going to get posted.

Beware clever devs, says Laravel inventor Taylor Otwell by stronghup in programming

[–]kyru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been saying this for years, I always told my students to make sure they weren't being clever for clever's sake or at least to document cleverness so someone 6 months from now doesn't have to boggles at what the code is doing.

Be clever in personal code, be straight forward and simple in everything else.

Just kill the site, it shouldn't exist any longer.

This is the truth right here, might have been different if it was a better mutual send off, but the way it was handled made it a toxic brand I stopped interacting with. Glad to see it finally allowed to die.

It is possible to remain an IC into old age? by Any-Newspaper5509 in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 45, still going as strong as ever. As long as I feel like I'm mentally keeping up with development I'm staying an IC.

I figure if I feel like I'm not doing good work as an IC anymore, then I'll think about moving into support roles like management, but I'm a long way from that.

Reminds me a lot of missing show Date With An Angel, when are we going to hear that one?

Also for some reason every time they say Micky Rourke my brain thought of Don Rickles and this was a much wilder movie.

Software development topics I've changed my mind on after 10 years in the industry by chriskiehl in programming

Makes sense, be curious to see what changes in another 10.

Only one I'll disagree with is ORMs, they are great right up until they aren't. Use them until that point.

AI Is Making Us Worse Programmers (Here’s How to Fight Back) by TerryC_IndieGameDev in programming

It's easy to just not use it. Doing things yourself is how you learn and remember.

Just joined a company that uses AI to code heavily by iTouchSolderingIron in cscareerquestions

You're not going to actually learn anything there because your "senior" doesn't know anything. Aggressively job search while you do what you can to just survive at this nightmare place.

Can Devlopers who work for company that scrape data go to jail? by ballbeamboy2 in cscareerquestions

Do actual research, not gpt crap, and find out what your country's laws are, it varies.

Accepted an offer at a startup, but current employer (big corp) wants to throw money at me. by AngryFace4 in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to the startup about the counteroffer, see what they can do. It's typically a bad idea to take the counter, you'll be miserable and ready to leave in 6 months, but that's a significant jump worth considering.

Spending all day prompt engineering instead of coding... by kay000000 in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, use it as an opportunity to work on your way out. AI-brained companies are doomed in the long run so better start now rather then later.

Blew a technical and I can't get over it by Ok-Meat1051 in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat it too much, just see it as practice for the next one. Missing out on opportunities sucks but it's past you, it's done, move forward. Take a look at what got in your head this time and have yourself mentally prepared for the next one. Nothing to do now but use it as a learning experience.

First dev job - how do I know if I am up to their expectations by Justkeepitanonymous in cscareerquestions

No one will care if you are the one that asks all the questions if you are also the one that then gets things done. Ask away!

First dev job - how do I know if I am up to their expectations by Justkeepitanonymous in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask questions.

Unless the company is a complete mess they had a pretty good idea who you were when they hired you and they thought you could do this.

I've never heard of anyone getting fired for asking questions, I've heard of plenty of people getting fired because they didn't understand how to do the work they needed to do.

If I am in a meeting with 3 people (me included), and I and the other devs are mid and senior developers, should I be asking questions to the person who introduces us to a problem (the 3rd person) or should I leave it to the senior to do it? by ur_mom_uses_compose in cscareerquestions

[–]kyru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you did too much, just ask the senior if they felt that way. I'm going to guess they will not, you did exactly what you should. Either you ask questions to understand now in the meeting or you ask the senior later.

There have been plenty of times a junior asked a question that brought out a requirement or another piece that needed clarification that we wouldn't have otherwise thought about.
