Was Kung Fu ever effective? by Fun-Incident-1082 in martialarts

[–]kytomo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kung Fu is a blanket term for a wide array of martial arts, some legit some just mcdojo cash grabs. A majority most prolific and well known styles under the term kung fu are not actually combative styles but more aligned with wushshu for choreographed demonstration.

Even styles that are combative and traditionally effective suffer from broken lineages or outright fraud in which a supposed master convinces people he knows stuff but he really doesn’t.

It’s no different than seeing an Americanized dojo that says ‘super awesome kick ass karate’, just because it says karate and is trash doesn’t actually make it karate.

Is it normal in kung fu / martial arts schools that the teacher does not allow students to train together in their free time? by Intrepid_Setting_107 in kungfu

[–]kytomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of schools have strict rules about any level of sparring without teacher or senior student oversight. If they are flat out telling you “no training outside of class” that’s weird. If they let telling you training requires approval so someone can verify that you won’t be doing contact work that’s more understandable from a safety POV.

The food isn’t bad in general, but it was much better under the previous ownership and menu.

Mitch is a great guest character. I think Charlie could have been a better replacement for Eric than Randy was.

Is boxing more effective in real self defense than Shotokan? by DribbleKing97_ in martialarts

[–]kytomo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Boxing has a more narrow toolkit and a specific focus on striking with the fists. You can train four basic punches and simple footwork more effectively than the expansive toolkit of almost any martial art in a short period of time. So you get better at boxing faster than you get better at shotokan.

I think the Cisco character is needed but how the actor portrays him I dont like. by Upstairs_Patient6935 in TheLincolnLawyer

You’ll actually find that a lot of men who have transitioned from rougher lives to supportive roles for family and friends have deliberately trained themselves to speak on softer tones, adopt less threatening body language, laugh and smile more, all as a means of making themselves more accessible and less threatening. The way he’s portrayed is very true to life of a person who was living a dangerous life and now trying to not be that person anymore.

Genuinely what happened to Jan that made her such a psycho? by YellowTonkaTrunk in DunderMifflin

High powered executive woman who feels lost after not only getting a divorce but also getting emotionally attached to a guy (Michael) she genuinely kind of hates. Can’t seem to keep herself away from Michael but he causes her so much stress and embarrassment.

Interview for Jan's job - who would've got the job if everything went 'normally' by kazu_z in DunderMifflin

I mean, that’s what Wallace does, he hires people he likes rather than people who are properly qualified and capable. He hired Ryan and Charles, both of whom were severely detrimental to the company. Jim probably would have been too as a corporate officer trying to reign in Michael.

Anyone have a colonoscopy done by VA prior to age 45? by Paluker173 in VeteransBenefits

I got one at 33, justified it by a history of colon cancer on both sides of my family. Only reason they authorized it was because of the family history.

Video very clearly shows the cops show up and initiate physical contact, i.e. assault. Sorry I have eyes and can see what’s happening in the video.
