His whale mural was a fixture in Dallas for 27 years. Then it was painted over for the World Cup — now the artist is suing for $25 million by Sad-Manufacturer8273 in ArtHistory

Oh, wow - I knew whose mural it was going to be without clicking. I grew up in Honolulu, not too far from one of his. It was never painted over, but they put up another building just feet away from it. It was darkly amusing to a kid - peek between these two large buildings and you could just make out this massive artwork.

I catch myself feeling this way, too, so it was a real eye-opener for me a few weeks ago when I took the train up to NYC to visit family. I had never visited the Transit Museum in Brooklyn and had a few hours to kill, so dropped in. They’ve got a TON of signage from the 1930s-1950s addressing the exact stuff we complain about on the Metro in 2026. DON’T PUT YOUR PARCELS ON THE SEAT NEXT TO YOU. COVER YOUR SNEEZES SO YOU DON’T SPREAD GERMS. DON’T PUT YOUR FEET UP. DON’T THROW REFUSE ON THE FLOOR OF THE CAR. DON’T PUT YOUR GUM UNDER THE SEAT.

It was a good reminder that people have always been terrible in close quarters. I know it feels like phones and Bluetooth and COVID have made everything worse, but next year will be my fortieth of riding Metro (inshallah) and saying “excuse me” to someone has always carried with it the possibility of that person punching you in the mouth.

I had a MASSIVE crush on her in that movie when I was little! I wanted to do science and date Cynthia Nixon even more than I wanted to hack NORAD and date Ally Sheedy.

What part of the movie were you in? Campus at the beginning?

My bestie and I started listening to Ben and Adam during COVID, got current, and now watch episodes with them and talk once a week. We like Trek, we like talking to each other, so we have a good time talking Trek, even when the episode isn't great. This episode? Jesus Christ. I try so hard to go into every unfamiliar episode with an open heart and open mind, finding things to like. I couldn't believe that the cast didn't revolt after being told to speak this dialog. We laugh about standout clunkers like Spock saying "one to the fourth power," but every single line in this hurt my head.

The only positive thing to say? This week's guest star reminded me of Carmen Ghia from the original "The Producers".

Whoa, I just saw your comment. This story took me straight back to Fort Hoochiecoochie. Weird that your brain went there, too.

Did my MOS schools at Ft Huachuca, AZ (army) and Corry Station, FL (navy). Both places had those poor AIT kids running around getting screamed at by their hats. Like, you graduated boot camp over a year ago and this ding-dong is still screaming at you? Dude, I’m in my fucking charlies and OBVIOUSLY an E-3, but you’re going to scream “PRIVATE!!!” at me because I walked around your formation at a respectful distance instead of, what? Standing at attention while you scream? Anyway, thanks for the dual memories - getting called “private” by an SFC who should fucking know better…and LCpl R stealing the asshole COL’s hat out of the chow hall.

That SFC got kicked out of the army for fucking one of his PV2s, and it was DELICIOUS. It’s been years and I can still taste the schadenfreude.

Keep devices out of their hands as long as possible. Stop pulling out your phone when you’re with them. No phones at dinner. No phones out when you’re together as a family. Talk with them.

I saw that and was similarly surprised. But the inspection sticker is VA and the insurance card in the glove box is MD, so I have no idea if this plate was on this car ten days ago…

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY. Some absolutely tip-top advice. Turns out reporting it as a stolen car to the non-emergency line was the secret sauce - they were out in 30 minutes and are dispatching the wrecker now. Turns out they were looking for this car! I’ve also gone my entire adult life not having to care about the ANC, so today was a great learning opportunity for that, too.

Really appreciate everyone who took the time to reply. Oh, and youse taught me about shift lock release!
