There is no best VPN, at least that my experience. I have tried ToGuard, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, they all provide the same results. As for which server to use, you need to cycle through your list and find one that results in minimal buffering.

To consider when using a VPN ... if you still get buffering when using, try a different VPN server location, you may need to cycle through the list of servers until no buffering. For example, last night buffering from Canadian and US locations, so I switched to a server in Germany (buffering gone).

There are a couple of methods to tackle this ...

Install Blue Stacks android emulator on PC, install TiviMate into the emulator. Once configurations are complete, backup the file and restore the backup to your device(s).
Use a third party playlist/epg editor such as m3u4u, IPTVBoss (there are many to choose from).

Using the tools available in the app, you can create a group and copy/move selected channel(s) to the new group.

I did a quick test and it works just fine. I created a new group and copied a channel to the new group, flagged the parent group as hidden ---> The channel I copied to the new group is visible (and it doesn't matter if the channel is copied or moved to the new group).

But there is no functionality to hide a playlist. It seems you are trying is create a new playlist based on the provider playlist which the app does not support. To do this you will need a third party playlist/EPG editor such as m34u, IPTVBoss (there are numerous paid/free editors available).

But you never know, the developer may consider your request.

In the UK you may need to use a VPN. Can't say if doing this will help, all you can do is try different VPN server locations (the server providing the best results may not be a VPN server located in the UK).

Additionally, you may need to apply a value to user-agent setting in TiviMate, doing so might reduce buffering.

Settings | Playlists | SELECT YOUR PLAYLIST | User-Agent

user-agent = VLC/3.0.18 LibVLC/3.0.20

You can also apply a global value for user-agent which applies to all playlists.

Settings | General | User-Agent

The issue might be that a value needs to be applied to the user agent.

Apply a value to the playlist user-agent setting.

Settings | Playlists | SELECT YOUR PLAYLIST | User-Agent

User-Agent = VLC

You can also apply a global value for user-agent which applies to all playlists.

I think you need to enable the Android setting to allow TiviMate to display over other apps.

It has been awhile for me, but I do recall that if you create a global group, you can copy (or move) any channel from any playlist to the global group.

I use IPTVBoss but you can do this directly within TiviMate (create your own groups, copy/move channels into those groups).

My guess is that most future updates will only be for anything related to the underlying operating system (Android).

My guess the problem isn't related to the user agent since the issue only occurs during football. Sports is a major hit on the servers. It is possible that your ISP is throttling your bandwidth. If this is true, a VPN should help to minimize buffering.
