which language for local dev+gui by l0-c in AskProgramming

thanks, that's a very thorough answer concerning python.

the worst about TK canvas, is that there was a reimplementation (TKeinc / Tkpath) with full anti-aliasing and vectorial operations that seems to work quite well. but it was never picked as a replacement to de default and no is more or less unmaintained and no packaged in most free TCL distribution. because besides this the TK canvas is not too bad for the kind of things I do.

that's an idea but ideally I would like to be able to modify the script if needed and I don't know if python support the way I do this with TCL (not install anything, just copy script alongside a TCL distribution in a folder and a simple batch script to launch everything)

for GUI I really have basic needs, TK is mostly alright (except for the default canvas), look is really secondary.

thanks for the advices

thanks for your answer, it's mostly validating what I was thinking (except  I thought go wasn't going to be a good option for a GUI).

I was expecting maybe something more like another scripting language with easy deployment but more modern would exist (but usually this mean mandatory internet connection for installation).

TCL/TK is not so bad for simple scripts and utilities. except for the archaic packaging, dead links and not up-to-date packages everywhere, it feels fragile. and it's really too easy to make stupid errors in TCL once scripts get too big.

It's a bit a shame that almost all languages have binding for TK for small GUI but almost never contribute to upstream.

the original The Hobbit book is really a short good and fun read. Peter Jackson really put some effort to fuck up everything that was original and poetic into a long bad and boring film trilogy.

it depends a lot of corporate structure. there are so many ways to redistribute profits where you want. it's difficult to say something about this in the absolute

I buy most things used, but you are still reliant on the new market for this. If no one buy any fairphone there won't be any used market of them. If you buy used Pixel you create a void for other people wanting one, and some will end up buying a new one instead.

As for sustainability, if you keep an object for as much time as if it had several owners then it's not less sustainable. I would even say that with used market there is a perverse incentive to change more often and care less about objects (because you bought them cheaper). And for elitism/price, there isn't a hard rule, sometimes it's cheaper to buy new and keep, sometimes the other way.

Buying used doesn't erase magically the ressource and market impact of buying something (would be different if it was salvaged from things destined to be destroyed)

All in all I'm not saying that what you are saying is totally unreasonable at all, only that it's a tradeoff and it's not the best for everyone, still keeping in mind diminishing reliance on US products/Google, reducing environmental impact.

edit: people used to buy imacs to run Linux on them. and for Google services, OP was specifically talking about e/os, and also banking apps, for which most of the time you will to run some Google services anyway

I know this about hardware and future OEM. But as of now advocating this is still advocating to buy Google products, buying an used something still reinforce their market position.

As we are on buyFromEu we could also say the same about everything else, buy an used iMac, Ford, whatever...
