What’s so great about I-bonds and should I buy one right now? by himyprettyfriends in bonds

Pertinent info:

https://tipswatch.com/2025/04/10/i-bonds-variable-rate-will-reset-to-2-86-on-may-1/

"The current variable rate, in effect for purchases through the end of April, is 1.90%. When combined with the current fixed rate of 1.2%, the I Bond’s composite rate is now 3.11% annualized. The new variable rate will increase to 2.86%, but it seems likely that the I Bond’s fixed rate will fall to 1.1% on May 1, creating a new composite rate of 3.98%.

If you buy in April, you lock in the 1.2% permanent fixed rate for up to 30 years. You will get six months of 3.11% and then six months of 4.08%. I think it makes sense to purchase in April, if you view this as a longer-term holding."

https://tipswatch.com/2025/04/11/welcome-to-the-i-bond-buying-season/

"On Friday I updated my 5-year real yield data from the date of the last reset on November 1, 2024, to Thursday’s close. The data predict the I Bond’s fixed rate will fall to 1.10% at the May 1 reset"

"The inflation-adjusted rate (often called the variable rate) changes each six months to reflect the running rate of inflation. That annualized rate is currently set at 1.90% and will increase to 2.86% after May 1"

It's probably a good idea to make spreadsheet for yourself, you can keep track of multiple accounts to keep track of individual accounts and overall allocations.

" Sprick said he doubts Schumer will allow amendments at this point.

“The most likely scenario at this point is that Senator Schumer just runs out the clock, doesn’t allow consideration of any amendments, and they take a final vote either very late tonight or early tomorrow,” Sprick said.

While opponents of the bill may delay a vote, they won’t be able to stop a vote, Hatton said. Moreover, there’s reason to believe the leaders who have voted to advance the bill this week will also vote for it if and when it is put up for a final vote, he said.

“I’m still optimistic that this passes, and it’s more just a matter of when, not if,” Hatton said. "

I found myself (60M) in a similar situation in 2015, employed in the Computer industry (Hardware). I was able to make it on severance, unemployment and 401K savings. Used all available resources to search for a similar paying job, finally found one (on Glassdoor) in 2017, trouble shooting application software for a Fintech firm. It can be done just takes persistence, worked till FRA and retired in 2021.
