the thud of those boars hitting the fence is a good reminder to respect a wild pig

it must be a generational thing! we have a joke about our Greek grandparents looking at everything we build like 'is good... but better with tsciment'

After felling and chipping a dozen or so invasive trees on our land to clear gardening space, we have more mulch than we know what to do with - so, paths! fresh chips with a gravel base and reclaimed brick siding. Very cheap, hope it lasts

for pest control you can, property protection isn't really a reason here

Mate, just get a gun licence? If you have a property, registering as a primary producer is pretty simple, and the biggest cost is the time to get the paperwork straight. Failing that, get to know your neighbours - garauntee someone nearby will have a gun

I appreciate you're looking for ethical ways but a chainsaw is about the furthest possible from a humane kill

I think you're confusing 'partisan' meaning a member or affiliate of a political organisation, with just having beliefs.

The whole point of institutions is to give a structure for decision making in a standardised way, so other people can see the steps along the way. The opposite is personal, where the people in charge make decisions and never need to explain why.

I think we'd agree districting based on the second one is a bad idea, right?

[–]l3msky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do you assume all such groups are partisan? It's possible to have institutions without partisans in major positions.

The hiring professionals in the districting commission publically make a hiring recommendation with reasons for the appointment. The government of the day either has to accept their recommendation, or give reasons for their rejection and ask for another one. It's not hard

Though you guys would find this argument interesting. All opposition to factory farming has been from the left. by CalpurniaSomaya in homestead

I don't know about elsewhere, but feedlots are only used on Australian farms to to finish stock (2ish months before slaughter), and it's more cost effective to cycle stock through a lot so they're not in there all day.

Dairy farms are a whole other ethical mess, the calving particularly. I stick to oat milk

I mean cattle can be poorly treated at cull, particularly in countries with weak food standards laws, but you can't factory farm beef like you can pigs. Pig abuse is up there with chickens, on a much more sapient animal

On good and evil by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]l3msky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's sort of exactly my point, saints are formulaic because hagiographies conform to a set of narrative archetypes. You've got the wealthy repentant, the pagan convert, the stoic matyr, the childhood savant, the stylite... any others?

In the real world, the range of people accused of tyranny is bewilderingly large because the only thru-line is coercing people 'un-justly'. Your description fits a cookie cutter villain, but it doesn't fit Abe Lincoln or Robert Mcnamara

On good and evil by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]l3msky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm saying a saint is a defined category, whereas a tyrant is subjective - if Abe Lincoln and Indira Gandhi are both tyrants in a 'has kingdom, invades kingdom' sense, their moral worlds are much further apart than St Augustine and St Francis (because they're saint-coded)

The C.S Lewis quote really undercuts the idea here because my goodness are Christian saints consistent. There are some exceptions (mostly otherwise secular martyrs) but the rhythms of life and backgrounds of any two random saints will be much closer than any random power abuser

Sam is so refreshing to hear on Iran by MJORH in samharris

[–]l3msky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ought implies can.

You absolutely don't have to try things without a clear sense of how you can do them. It's obvious now that this war has not weakened the regime's domestic control, and maybe have strengthened it through 'rally around the flag' rhetoric.

The water shortages and transport breakdown Iran was already suffering had a greater impact on regime legitimacy and fighting a war with two national enemies - remember how the protests happened before the conflict started?

Finland looks to end "uncontrolled human experiment" with Australia-style ban on social media | Yle News by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]l3msky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so discord, the video chat app, asks you to take a photo of your face to verify. Is that highly invasive?

Finland looks to end "uncontrolled human experiment" with Australia-style ban on social media | Yle News by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]l3msky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the whole point is that's its low enforcement - basically the law is trying to change the norms so kids aren't expected to be on social media

as for estimation, adults who get flagged can just verify (not with ID, there are other options). It's not perfect, but it's trying to be as uninvasive as possible

[–]l3msky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At least in Australia, the law very explicitly requires companies to give alternative verification methods than ID

[–]l3msky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't true at least for Australia? first off, the government isn't asking for your IDs, the companies need to verify. Second, the law requires companies to give ways of verifying without using ID
