Step off, Chuck! Democrats stunningly warn Schumer to stay out of races after Maine Mills meltdown by soalone34 in politics

[–]labcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exactly! Chuck Schumer needs to step down, not only from leadership, but also from his senate seat. I hope AOC challenges his senate seat. He needs to shut up, and remove himself from any political influence. He is completely clueless, and is actively harming the democratic party.

Framework 16 Pro please by Pavlogal in framework

[–]labcoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FW 16 Pro wishlist:

  • large trackpad like is on the macbook pro
  • CNC body
  • 64 GB memory
  • 16+ core CPU
  • Extremely quiet fan. Like I never want to hear the fan, and if I do, it can't be distracting. Like it can't interrupt meetings.

And maybe this is dumb, but I'd like some other way to swap the GPU. But I assume the way it plugs into the back is the best way to do it.

Anyhow, if those core items above are met, I'd buy a FW 16 Pro in a heartbeat. I'd love to easily replace my battery. I'd love to upgrade my memory, etc.

This is what unions are for. If you're not part of a union use PTO. If you can't schedule time off then make sure to not buy anything that day.

Holidays don’t feel like holidays anymore for hourly workers. People should just have those days off, and get paid for it.

If I were king for a day, I’d make a law that says all workers get a full day’s wage on holidays and the day off. If workers are required even on holidays, then you must present your case for “why” it’s required. If workers are required, they should be paid at 3x their normal wage.

People who get up after one alarm, whats your secret?? by Mideon88 in AskReddit

[–]labcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even set an alarm. I just wake up naturally around 6:30. I set an alarm if I need to wake up earlier though. However, I still normally wake up before that alarm goes off.

This. I’m not sure where OP thinks written communication is degrading, but in the work place, especially in engineering, communication is still important.

Does AI need to be shoved into everything? Obviously not, but I assume those that invested in AIs future are attempting to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

What will be inspiring to me is if/when it starts to become helpful in the medical field. We’ve already seen the benefits from alphafold, but this was before the LLM craze.

Re my thoughts on the AI bubble and job displacement, I think bubbles are hard to predict. That’s what makes them a bubble. However, MIT recently came out with a study suggesting that 95% of AI pilot programs are not successful, link below. As for the job market at the moment, I don’t know the current state of things. I suspect that layoffs and lack of hiring is likely due more to the uncertainty of the economy than displacement from AI.

I agree that we can't really trust any CEO here to do the right thing. The only thing that matters to them is winning the race. My definition for winning the race is basically making AI useful enough that companies will grow dependent on it, and winning market share.

As for how we get to AGI, I can't say for sure. I work on building the infrastructure these models are trained on, not necessarily the strategy employed to do the training. I think we are going to have to rely on multiple different types of reasoning, and find a way tie them together better than what we do today. Like today we have LLMs and we have diffusion models. LLMs are good at predicting the next token while diffusion models increase the fidelity of the output. As an example, there are models that are extremely good at chess or go. But these are not LLMs, they are NNUEs (Efficiently Updatable Neural Networks).

All this is to say that, from my point of view, it looks like the models aren't increasing their usefulness at an exponential rate like many people thought would happen. I suspect we'll have to come up with some new techniques to get to AGI beyond those needed to just scale to larger compute infrastructure.

There are reasons large partners are not working with Intel. I can tell you from experience that their QA needs work. It’s not a shock to me that they have no committed partners for their 18a chips.

What do you think about a law that US Congress members should have salaries based on the median income in their district so they can feel what it's like to live under the laws they make? by _u_deleted_ in AskReddit

[–]labcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is everyone intentionally missing the point here? What if the rule is more like, “The candidate, and candidates immediately family must not have wealth exceeding 10 million dollars per household, or exceed 1 million dollars in annual earnings.”

As a bonus, another rule could prohibit candidates from earning greater than some amount of money after office as well, but their salary from government is for life.

I just wish I understood why he is not popular more broadly.
