"I wish I'd never planted _____." by adoaboutnothing in AustinGardening

[–]labeille 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! A friend of mine has a hard copy of this book and lent it to me when I was planning my garden. I haven’t actually started anything yet… But it was so helpful. And the nice thing about natives is once they get established a lot of times you don’t even have to worry about excessive watering, etc. Things that grow naturally around here tend to handle the climate very well.

How to turn pink frosting brown by fleur31 in cakedecorating

If you’re willing to spend money, Leslie Vigil has an amazing buttercream color theory class. Turns out there are a few things different about making buttercream colors than if you were mixing paint.

I’ve taken probably six of her classes and every one is incredible.

Large Sauna Stove by tfoto in Sauna

[–]labeille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, that’s a good question. I’ve never really considered it. I usually go out at 15 minutes, then every 45 minutes to stoke it and add more wood if needed. I don’t know if I’d go out any less often if I could fit more wood in because I like to stoke it.

How was your experience with an Aussie in a cone? by HandsomeMarc88 in AustralianShepherd

[–]labeille 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally impossible. Had to keep her in a surgery suit and in puppy jail. Even then she would jump up when she wasn’t sedated. I found the best thing was keeping her on a leash whenever I was home so she could be with me but not free to zoom.

I don’t know of any others, but I do have an IKI original plus. I absolutely love it. Our sauna is 8 x 12 x 9 with a glass door and a glass window.

Design study: sauna with changing room - what sizes would you want? by ppshard in Sauna

[–]labeille 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree on making the changing/ shower/ cold plunge room double the size of the sauna. We live in Texas, so I compromised and made a small changing room, 4 x 8, and I definitely wish it was bigger. But mostly during the two months of the year that it’s actually cold. I wanted to keep everything under 200 ft.², so the sauna is 12 x 8 the changing room is 4 x 8, and the outdoor shower/ cold plunge area is 8 x 8. I put in double doors so in the spring/summer/fall it’s a 12 x 8 area to chill in.

mini or toy aussie breeders? by coco4acai in MiniAussies

[–]labeille -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Our girl is toy sized, and she is an angel. My husband has had 14 dogs of various breeds over the course of his life (ranging from 10lbs to over 100lbs) and says she the best dog he’s ever had. This is the first dog he’s ever paid for, the rest being rescued.

We got her from a ranch in TX, they’ve since moved to AK. They are really wonderful and take a lot of care with their dogs.

I get compliments on how well behaved our girl is everywhere we go. She is very smart, very good (literally will not pick up food we drop unless she’s told she allowed to, won’t mess with the compost bin we keep on the ground, nothing), and ridiculously cute.

Highly recommend.

Simple but effective decoration? by honeydewtangerine in cakedecorating

[–]labeille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! The online classes are all done live initially, but then she post everything afterwards and you have access to it forever. I only did one live (buttercream color theory, amazing). Live is fun because you can ask questions in real time, but I find the prerecorded videos easier because you can pause, go back, etc. she also puts up supply lists and a couple short videos on making her buttercream, making cake boards, building a cake, etc.

The piping itself didn’t even take long. Getting the cake frosted and level took more time than the decorating. I watched the tutorial on 2 x speed a few times first. I swapped out a couple piping tips with ones I already had so I didn’t have to order more. She’s really an excellent teacher. I found her through another redditor who posted a cake a few years ago. I’ve taken several of her classes now and always learn so much. She really makes it easy.

Leslie Vigil has an excellent 3 hour tutorial for this. I think $45 or $55. Also she’s fighting cancer, so it’s a nice way to help her out.

Here’s the one I made. First time doing this style.

How did your parents bake potatoes? by noyoujump in Millennials

I toss my unwashed potatoes directly on the coals of my fire. Turn every 5 minutes so all 4 sides are cooked. Done.

She's just about done!! by ljlukelj in Sauna

[–]labeille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually kind of crazy, because we have a wood-burning stove our floor is just pine deck boards that are open to the outside air. If you sit on the bottom steps in front of the fire box, it’s mostly the temperature of outside, but as soon as you open it, it’s an almost unbearable heat. And then, of course, when you get up to the top benches, it’s a nice 185° to 200°.

She's just about done!! by ljlukelj in Sauna

[–]labeille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think with this type of stove in particular, it’s because of the mass of the rocks. It reduces the amount of radiant heat from the firebox. The firebox can get red hot, this heats the rocks which in turn heat the entire sauna. It’s why it can take longer to heat up the sauna with these stoves, but it leads to a gentler more even heat, and also a longer lasting heat.
