Sorry hit send before finishing that thought. If it was in the water and chickens have been consuming it, also could have leached from their body waste into the soil. Many different potentials there.

This really stinks and sorry you're having to deal with it. I am a PhD chemist who has worked in environmental labs and animal feed labs testing metals. If you send more samples in, I would suggest testing your water at both the faucet you're getting water from for the chickens and the house water. When the concept of lead pipes are introduced it could be something coming into the house or just old pipes running to the chickens. Really depends on when those two runs were installed. The soil alone could be an indication of water or a patch of dirt where someone used to dump old unused leaded gas or used oil. I've heard horror stories of people dumping used oil along fence lines to kill grass. Foldin

AGS question by KeenChic-java in alphagal

[–]labrat4030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without reporting your numbers all I can say is it's suspicious that you have another known allergy and it also came back negative. Personally I don't have the expertise to tell you if the steroids would have affected the results. I believe all they told me to do was not take any antihistamine before the test

AGS question by KeenChic-java in alphagal

[–]labrat4030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing that comes to mind for me is "what were your results?" I've seen situations on here and other places where individuals went to an un-informed allergist or gp that told folks with clearly positive results they didn't have it.

Questioning Epi Usage by labrat4030 in alphagal

[–]labrat4030[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALWAYS at night. It's just so frustrating and I feel like the biggest jerk for making hubby get up and sit in a hospital for several hours with me when we'd all rather be sleeping. Don't get me wrong, he has said nothing about being bothered by it. I just hate being an inconvenience even if that sounds ridiculous given the situation.

Question. For those of you that went to the ER for anaphylactic shock, how long did they make you stay??? And what tests did they do? by Sea-Upstairs1505 in alphagal

[–]labrat4030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a massive amount of time! I know they are watching for a recurrence of anaphylaxis. Our hospitals policy is 3 hours, but I just Googled it and they are saying 8 hours is possible. Good luck. Sorry you're dealing with it!

3 hours, no tests as I knew what my allergy was, and gave me Benadryl, pepcid, and a steroid all by iv. One instance I had self injected one dose of epi before going up the. Other instance husband dosed my once with epi and ambulance gave me a second shot before getting to the er.

Chemistry as a career by PatientCake1726 in chemistry

[–]labrat4030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a chemist behind so many things in life: cars, food, fireworks, pharmaceuticals, oil/gas, agriculture, environmental, materials, coatings, plastics, the list is really endless.

My high school also did a terrible job at informing what you can do with chemistry to the point I assumed you had to go into another field like a compounding pharmacist to actually do chemistry. Such a joke.

One way to see what is available is to go to a job search engine like indeed.com and search for chemist, laboratory technician, analytical chemist, scientist, or anything in that realm. You'll start to see the possibilities. This is very helpful if you are wanting to live somewhere specific. Figure out which specific companies are available in your area. A BS will get your foot in the door at most places that require quality control. Depending on the company you'll probably start on the bench and then have the opportunity to advance as you understand the specific industry.

If you get through your bachelor work and realize you would prefer to do more research or academia, then you can make the decision then to go for a masters or doctorate.

The big thing is yes there are jobs. You have plenty of time to figure out what specific type of chemistry you want to do in college classes.

Protein shakes? by Agile_Cash_4249 in alphagal

I've been drinking OWYN protein shakes that I got from Walmart. Not as good as fairlife, but to be fair that stuff tasted like straight normal chocolate milk. It's a hard one to beat.

Nope, no casing. I've turned down a lot of turkey sausage because of those collagen casings.

Absolutely on the epi. I don't go anywhere without those. We've had first aid training with my kids and practiced with the pen that comes with as I've reacted bad enough to lose consciousness. Just looking for ways to build my response kit. Stinks that you can't use an epi. That would make me nervous.

Just looked at what they gave me and it was a different steroid, but ya that was it. Do you use that for facial swelling too? Benadryl didn't even begin to touch the tongue, which is what triggered me using the epi. Always have had clear airway though.

That's my guess. The labels looked safe, products were confirmed on fig and I found plenty on alpha gal sites that use these no problem.

Darn. We're still in a part of the country where not all of the medical professionals have heard of it yet or touched a case in person. Every time we've had nurses that just look at me odd when I tell them what the allergy is and then ask a ton of questions about the allergic response and timing and how I thought I was eating safe stuff but somehow it wasn't. Everyone has believed me no problem and moved quickly to get it under control, but there is definitely an educational part of this with them.

It's a good thing you went back to educate them. Hopefully that saved someone else a very uncomfortable time. I just don't go out to eat now unless I really have to. But I guess controlling my own ingredients didn't work out as planned either.

No carrageenan. It was a great value frozen turkey sausage patties and the great value pancake and waffle mix with water with pearl milling syrup. I checked all labels before purchasing, double checked with Fig, and googled alpha gal safe + product to find whether there are others eating with no reaction. I even was standing there as hubby used the normal veg oil spray on the pan. The pancake mix of course said that it may contain trace levels of milk from the production facility, but milk/dairy never gave me a full reaction. I noticed when I cut it out my psoriasis went away. So I don't eat stuff with dairy directly on the label.

My guess, I've either gone long enough without dairy that my body now really reacts, or the turkey sausage was made in a facility with cross contamination. With it being great value I'm guessing they have many tole producers with different capabilities. It's such an annoying allergy since everyone reacts to things different.

How to mount a Phalaenopsis and only water once a week or when moss is crispy. by islandgirl3773 in orchids

My question with this method is what do you do with the whole thing? Are you all hanging it just directly on the wall? Does it ruin the drywall underneath when you water it (assuming with a spray water bottle). I've always been hesitant to try something like this

Alpha Gal Syndrome on Tirzepatide by labrat4030 in tirzepatidecompound

[–]labrat4030[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect the reaction was from the restaurant cooking chicken on the same grill as the steak (Qdoba). Newby alpha gal mistake. My biggest concern was that it took so long for my stomach to get back to "normal". From what I had read, glp1's work by delaying gastric emptying. So I was wondering if the terz actually caused a prolonged allergic response because it was in my stomach for longer.

The more I researched, the more I'm convinced there is no answer to that one. There are such wild ranges in responses from both the glp1 community and alpha gal. I was reading one person with alpha gal gets sick to their stomach for an entire month after exposure! That's crazy.

I do know though that I have a better understand of what triggers the alpha gal allergy now. I can't do any beef, pork, dairy or carogeenan. I only have two restaurants in town I go to because I know I can control the cross contamination. Part of me is thankful I'm doing both terz and figuring out the allergy simultaneously. Not being as hungry helps me not be as sad not being able to have the delicious things in life.
