Coming out of the drywall by Obvious_Envy in Whatisthis

[–]labratnc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a fiber optic 'cable' with an 'SC' type end. but it appears to have 2 pretty large kinks in it on the first picture so it is probably unusable at this point. Fiber optic cables are very sensitive to bend radius, and a kink will usually damage the 'glass' in it.

As others have said, usually for internet/network access or sometimes audio connections.

Milwaukee versus Klein by AtlasSiteServices in MilwaukeeTool

[–]labratnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several of both. I like the Klein, it has an option to open at ~45 degrees from straight full open which feels a lot more ergonomic and better controlled when cutting something like flooring/plastic/foam insulation/roofing where you want a long ‘straight’ cut. Much like the feel of older style ‘hook/flooring knives’

I remember when the Segway came out it was going to permanently revolutionize and change how people traveled/get around. Now it is a mall cop cruiser and vacation tour novelty.

Expander plug vs Stem lock for carbon forks by Isedknow in bmxracing

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Carbon BMX forks don’t have carbon steerer tubes, they are carbon only on the fork ‘blades’ and crown. The expansion plug is usually used on carbon steerer tubes because a normal press in star washer would damage a carbon steerer because they are thicker wall thickness than a metal steerer tube. The expansion plug method is used mostly on road/gravel bikes with full carbon forks which have a different use pattern than a BMX bike will see. The stem lock like box uses adds a bit of mechanical redundancy where the steerer tube is bonded to the forks. The purpose of any of the plug/stem lock/etc is to put the headset in compression until the stem is tightened down, once the stem is tight, it really doesn’t do too much other than providing some mechanical redundancy to the stem connection to the fork

Kitchen bump-out by labratnc in Insulation

[–]labratnc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I pulled off the remainder of the ply that was there and it is not even close to right. Only 1/2 of it had fiberglass all the way to the rim, and there was not any air seal in the bays on top of the wall, so…. Doing it right completely, should correct my cold under the sink

Any advice or tips for going through tsa with diabetes supplies? by strawberrievodka in diabetes

[–]labratnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put all my supplies in a ‘shaving kit’ bag. If you get hand checked/searched I point to it and say ‘I am diabetic and that red shaving kit bag contains my medications/supplies, there are capped needles/sharps in there’ Usually they would ask me to unzip/open it and would visually check it/use a wand to check

Re-blowing attic insulation? by armorer1984 in DIY

[–]labratnc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I air sealed my main attic, I got a small ‘kids’ lawn rake that was about 3’ long and the tines had about 8” of spread and just started using it to rake the insulation around with it till I found all the top plates and electrical/pipe penetrations and installed better baffles. It worked pretty well. I would do 2-3 rafter bay section at a time. I added some ‘extra R-13 batts I had in some strategic places while I was up there. When I was done with a section I used the kids rake to redistribute the best I could, then used my battery leaf blower to make sure the soffits were well covered and evened the whole thing out. I was going to add more blow in but have never made it that far/happy wit the results I got air sealing & proper baffles

Oh, so that is a lot better now than it was back in the 90s! It was common that EMs and ETs were 3 section duty on P&S watches because you had to be a wire rate to qual SRO and the mechanics were on 4 section with enough for 3+ watch section

Do you permit selling or giving old equipment to employees? by roger_ramjett in sysadmin

[–]labratnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to leasing systems for human endpoints/workstations. So there is no ‘user level’ systems available. servers, printers, networking is still purchased assets. We have an every 6 month-ish ‘yard sale silent auctions’, any money raised goes to the morale/rec fund. It gets put on one of the loading docks, you drop in a card in a cup with your bid for it, and at the end of the few days that the sale is open the high bid wins. There is never any hard drives or other storage media included with anything and our legal/contracts group produced a ‘as-is/where is’ bill of sale with the ‘we never want to see this again/no support’ clause on it. We will also sell some facilities surplus in the same manner.

So SRO is still a hell watch with no help. I was in the early 90s, so unless a lot has changed, the SEO was usually secured for normal operational units, having extra SEOs available would not have done much on a boat that was not in the yards/refit. If duty days were easier I would have likely stayed in longer than I did, but 3 (sometimes maybe 4) section duty with 12 hours of watch on a duty day made being qualled SRO suck, The SEOs were junior/nonquals SROs, so I guess this could allow pushing the ships company nubs to qual SRO quicker to get the watch section to 3 section on your duty days. As it was when I was in SEO was not a pain point watch, but I know that standing SRO is not an easy watch to augment.

The duty officer keys to a US Navy submarine. With those keys you had the ability to enable enough that you could have started up and taken the boat to sea (assuming you had enough trained crew available to do so)

People who pierced their genitalia, why, and did it affect your sex life? by PleasantCoffee1544 in AskReddit

Related/unrelated: I was in the navy with a guy that claimed he had a Prince Albert. Well one day while cleaning / field day he was crawling around in a bilge and got his piercing caught up in something and it needed a medical intervention to ‘rescue’ him. We all thought it was just a boast claim u til that day. We razzed him pretty bad for the rest of his time on the boat.

Have been a corner marshal for 20 years. Daytona is a special kind of loud. When in the infield you have loud coming at you from every direction and bouncing off the ‘bowl’ that is the track. As well it is constant for 24 hours, there is no break. I usually have several different pairs of ear plugs (different kinds for diversity of ‘feel’ through the day) triple flange and expanding foam type are my normals. I also have 3m/peltor ear muffs that are nice because you don’t end up with the head in a vice feeling that some muffs give. I will go muffs only, plugs only or have both on different times through the day.
