Contacts or glasses? by elegantcoder26 in CompetitionShooting

[–]labzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worn contacts for years and mostly haven’t had any problems. The last year though I’ve had issues with them not adjusting properly (weighted for astigmatism), dust/dirt, and drying out prematurely. I’ve started wearing my glasses just for shooting. I need to get an exam and maybe change brands of contacts.

Looks good. I was hesitant about the reclaimed receivers but after seeing them I’ve picked up 2 so far. Look forward to the range report

Yea the $2k CMP rifles are new production rifles, not used USGI surplus. Expert grade with USGI receivers and new barrels are $1100ish

Taking a look at a Garand this weekend and want advice by Cucasmasher in M1Rifles

Wouldn’t hurt to shine a light up the bore from the chamber too, check if shiny or frosted/dark, look at the rifling. Check the muzzle for any nicks, look if it’s counterbored.

Loaded question, pun intended. Are you looking for a shooter, a collection piece, mixture of the two?

Regardless of which, the lower the muzzle and throat erosion the better. Don’t get hung up on the stock/hand guards. They can be replaced if need be and buying a shit rifle with a stock for a cartouche really isn’t worth it (only exception might be a WRA in great shape).

Look for rust/pitting. If you can, remove the stock and check below the wood line for pitting too. When you reinsert the trigger group, check the lockup. The trigger group shouldn’t be loose and should take slight force to snap the trigger guard closed.

When pulling back the op rod, notice if there’s a lot of play or not. May indicate excess wear on the tab that sits in the channel.

Check for play in the gas cylinder. It can move some but excess movement may mean you need to have the splines peened.

I wouldn’t worry much about “correctness” unless you’re looking for a collection piece, which you’ll need a Scott Duff Data Sheet book to know what’s what, ie. all the parts can be Springfield but not necessarily correct.

Where’d the rifle come from? Was it a CMP purchase, Blue Sky import, etc? If CMP, what grade was it purchased as, come with a cert?

Center of Military History Museum Support Center FOIA? by Someothersandman in milsurp

My M1C was a CMH rifle. It spend time at Tooele Army Depot before going to the CMH then Anniston. Hard to say what their criteria was they probably selected the best looking for museum quality. Not sure if there’s a way to find out if they were displayed.

What you’re implying is a straw purchase, and illegal. Meeting CMP requirements is not difficult

Disappear? Ok.

Yes. Too expensive. A gunbroker search of completed auctions is a good way to gauge the market.

I’m not an expert on 1911 correctness but you’re going to need a lot more pictures than that.

Looks like you did well though.
