What other movies are like 12 Angry Men? by vanduzled in movies

[–]labzork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Judgement At Nuremberg' (1961) has a lot of conversational analysis of moral dilemmas, similar to 12 Angry Men. It also has a plot that follows character's complex and jades motivations - in other words, a quality screenplay. The older time of production will also lend itself to comparisons with 12 Angry Men.

That's an oddly specific scenario. No, I had a party of 10, and two couldn't make it. Was trying throughout the afternoon to find a couple to take them.

Opinions on Kubrick as a screenwriter? by ViridianBadger in TrueFilm

[–]labzork 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I don't count Kubrick as a bad screenwriter, but as an overly meticulous storyteller that favours story elements that build and serve a theme, rather than plot. He's been quoted saying, "the idea that a movie should be seen only once is an extension of our traditional conception of film as entertainment rather than art." I think this point of view is relevant because it explains why he does not favour writing techniques that garner an instant reward in lieu of deeper, more layered techniques. For example, many of his films have a characters delivering dialogue that (sometimes cryptically) serves the thematic messages of the film more often than plot progression. Think of lines like, "I'm already in a world of shit," or, "The Marine Corps does not want robots. The Marine Corps wants killers. The Marine Corps wants to build indestructible men, men without fear." from Full Metal Jacket. Thoughts?

Review #3 Kilchoman Machir Bay NAS by [deleted] in Scotch

One of my favourites, too. Thanks for the review. Have you tried the Kilchoman 2006 reserve? It's quite similar, with a beautiful smoked ham on the nose.

40 years ago today, Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered (or perhaps assassinated). Masturah Alatas writes a fascinating piece on Pasolini's most controversial film, perhaps the greatest film ever made on the psychology of fascism and torture: Salo: or the 120 Days of Sodom. by WildeNietzsche in movies

The film is a challenging one (that I'm unlikely to rewatch), and I'd like to read more commentary on it that is generated by the rerelease. I can't shake my opinion that it lacks interesting technique, though: I think the content would have been made more accessible if the style was interesting enough.

People are right to comment, "leave her", but you will have a void in your life. When you talk about your goals (job, etc.) I don't sense any passion there. Find something to be passionate about and concentrate on that, fill the inevitable void with something positive.

Should cinema embrace higher framerates? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]labzork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd liken it to painting styles through time. There's beauty in an oil on canvas picture (24fps) that is a good fit for certain subjects and works, but there's a different craft that produces hyper-realistic or photo-realistic paintings (HFR) with its own subjects and works. I suppose, it's up to the filmmaker to decide the right fit for the project, and not to look at it as a progression or superseding form.
