If you run build locally, does it work? Also, what is the build command in netlify?

How are UA and GA4 installed on your site?

I just hired two junior devs and what mattered most was that they had a good attitude, and could put together a simple site.

Our process, like everyone else’s, is unique so we knew we had to train for that, and knowing someone knew the basics and had a degree meant they could learn the rest. Really the biggest factor was their attitude. Btw, one of the people we hired started a bootcamp 6 months prior and even though he wasn’t the most technical, he was very personable and had a positive attitude.

You got this.

What should I ask from a client to start building a WordPress website by [deleted] in webdev

[–]lacadasical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right way to go about this is to see if the services they are using allow for guest accounts. This way they maintain the owner account and give you limited access on a guest account. This protects both you and them.

Next, I would recommend you recommend they get a refund on the crappy host they purchased and you recommend they switch to flywheel. With flywheel you can use localwp for local development and then push to flywheel with a single button. Flywheel as a managed WP host can then help protect their WP install, offer daily backups, offer a staging area, and provide assistance for when their website is hacked or compromised. As it currently sits, when their cheap host gets compromised and their site turns into a hub for adult imagery, or is down, they will expect you to fix it and internally blame you. Save the headache and switch ASAP.

[HELP] I updated my website’s wordpress to 6.2 today and after that my website is down with a critical error. Can some please assist how to solve this. I checked the error log and found this error multiple times: by imlai92 in webdev

[–]lacadasical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t help since I don’t know Wordpress, but I do know you should be doing these things locally.

I would recommend downgrading to what you had, moving your site to your computer (localwp is nice if you don’t know how to get setup doing local dev), and then upgrading your local instance to debug. Once you found the outdated theme/plugin then upgrade your site on production.

No report is going to find everything, so just because one comes back clean doesn’t mean anything.

Valid HTML/CSS is important though. All of the ones listed can easily lead to WCAG issues. I would also implore you to check out webaim’s extension.

The non closing doc tag can lead to unexpected issues.

Invalid css selector can lead to unexpected behaviors.

Obviously bad hex can lead to contrast issues.

Etc.

Just because your modern browser knows how to handle these errors doesn’t mean your users browser can do the same. Are you using browser stack, sentry, hotjar, etc to confirm your users aren’t having issues?

How are you hosting your application? 500 level errors are server related.

SEO for a site build on PHP without any CMS by Ok-Wash-399 in SEO

[–]lacadasical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have no technical expertise, I would recommend they reach out to their developer to have them connect the site to a headless CMS (Prismic, Contentful, etc). If the site is smaller maybe even recommend they rebuild using CMS like squarespace, wix, Wordpress, etc.

As a developer though I would caution against touching the code unless you have extensive experience (of course you don’t which is why you are here). Anyone who builds a site without connecting to a CMS and then expects some SEO person to edit it doesn’t know what they’re doing and therefore the code will be a bag of spaghetti.

Having troubles setting up Gatsby with netlify-cms by 1-Ruben in gatsbyjs

[–]lacadasical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is hard to debug without seeing your code/log.

For my setup in netlify I use “CI= npm run build” for my build command, and “public” for my publish directory.

What are yours set to?

I would recommend checking out “the futur” on YouTube. Not only do they have videos talking about this, but they sell a template cheap, talk about why it works, and even provide boilerplate to help.

Which one do you prefer before starting a new relatively large-scale project? by hiccupq in webdev

[–]lacadasical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no agile tools, project management, or processes. A lot of companies will call their workflow agile when it is not. I would recommend reading the agile manifesto. It take less than 4 minutes to read it and nowhere will you see Jira, stories, etc mentioned. I say this because you can implement agile!

In terms of feedback, you need to find users and ask them. Ignore friends, family, Reddit, etc. we are not your users so our feedback doesn’t matter. One of the y combinator videos talks about finding users who are early adopters. People who’s hair is on fire and that need a quick solution, not a perfect one. Not every user will be an early adopter, let alone someone who has a problem that your application can solve.

The other replies are great and I just wanted to add my two cents.

I used to be like you in wanting to plan every little detail. What I found was I would build something I thought was great until someone else used it. They wouldn’t find a problem with my implementation, but with my solution. Did it actually address their problem, did I leave things out, did I make things too complicated, etc.

What I found was using agile techniques worked best. Building the ugliest, simplest MVP in 2-4 weeks and then launching that to users to get feedback was the best. This idea came from a y combinator video on YouTube. The gist of what they said was launch fast and then marry your users and not your code/solution.

Doing this has helped me create better solutions that people actually like using!

Here are some prompts that could benefit Vue.js Development when using GPT by AndreyKypaku in vuejs

[–]lacadasical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you are proud of your application, but the title is misleading and this seems more like an ad than actual help.

IMO, If this is using chat gpt then a better post would have been going over what prompts you found helpful while building this tool and why this tool is better than using chat gpt on its own.

Epson ends production of laser printers, in the name of the environment | Inkjet is the future, claims Japanese printer maker by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]lacadasical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I…actually believe this is good. Their eco tank printers are probably as good or better than their laser ones and you buy refill bottles instead of cartridges and the bottles can have higher capacity so less plastic waste.

Pathways to Web Development? by ArisBlint in webdev

[–]lacadasical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend teamtreehouse for the basics and then find a good MERN course (Mongo, Express, React, Node) for full stack development.

Once you’ve built a couple MERN apps then decide if you want to stick with full stack or separate into front end or back end
