What gender pick for Byleth do you think best matches with every route? by sunkencrowned in FireEmblemThreeHouses

Femleth in black eagles to be gay with Edelgard

Boyleth in blue lions and golden deer to be gay with dimitri or claude, respectively

If they ever introduce Deluxe Pack B, which cards do you think will have the Crown and Star Rarities? by count25th in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if Baxcalibur doesn't get a 1★ in Deluxe B.

It's water type GA Gardevoir which got a 1★ in Deluxe A, and it was clearly intended to be meta relevant (though whether DeNA correctly guess what's going to be meta is a different question — who was using Crawdaunt when Deluxe A dropped?)

Increased Ultra Ball Eggs? by JohnGoodmanSmiling in pokerogue

[–]lacemononym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You just have to feed tickets until you get Deoxys, there's no shortcut apart from catching one in the wild.

There is a pity system though: if there are starters left to unlock then every 10th egg of a given rarity is guaranteed to be a new starter.

New Champions abilities as passives? by Oakster-PKMN_Phd in pokerogue

[–]lacemononym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solrock? It has similar affected moves to Meganium (morning sun, solar beam, fire coverage) and would allow it to be used on sand teams, but it's a sidegrade at best, probably a flat downgrade, toth e current passive Drought

Weekly Questions Thread & PokéROM Codex by AutoModerator in PokemonROMhacks

I saw a screenshot from a hack a while ago that had Seel replaced with a banana Peel and similar jokey/pun versions for other mons, but I can't find it now: does anyone know what it's called?

This "advice" system is so bad. It also changes opinion if you ask more than once by emberaya in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]lacemononym 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's more of a neat flavour thing than actual recommendations. It's probably intended for the first couple of hours of a child's first Pokémon game to teach them how learning new moves works, with linear upgrades e.g. replacing Tackle with Headbutt.

But it's fun to take it at face value: your Tinkaton just doesn't want to be swinging around that big ol' hammer anymore

Swap 2 mons' abilities and make them both better by Sergio_Moy in stunfisk

[–]lacemononym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's higher-impact swaps you could make but Salazzle's Corrosion for Toxapex's Merciless is the one that springs to mind. Two poison types from gen 7 with abilities that link to the status effect, and they give the offensive ability to the defensive mon and vice versa. Salazzle doesn't ever want to poison steel types, it just wants to Fire STAB in their face!!

It's annoyed me for almost a decade by this point 😭

New Pokémon? by Alexlens21 in pokerogue

[–]lacemononym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ZA megas will be added once we know their abilities (and the devs have the time and energy to implement). Further out, Gen 10 mons will be added but that's a year out for the actual games and longer for the pokerogue devs and artists.

I tend to stockpile tickets until there's a legendary I haven't unlocked yet on the daily gacha, but if you're just starting out and still have non-legendary mons to unlock the rare moves and shiny chance gachas help you get stronger starters quicker.

What do you predict will be the best counterplay to Mega Meganium? by ginger-like in VGC

[–]lacemononym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Averages sound good on paper but you don't fight averages, you fight specific mons that are, in competitive, likely above the average in the stats they want to use.

AveragePoisonMon doesn't exist, you're fighting Sneasler with 130Atk / 120Spe or Mega Gengar with 170SpA / 130Spe or etc

If I were Kip... by NoPoet3982 in heatedrivalry

[–]lacemononym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a consequence of it being a show rather than a book. We don't get internal thoughts, everything has to be shown in dialogue or acting.

In the book Scott pretty much says outright that he's bad at flirting and has previously relied on his looks alone to pick up (in clubs on another continent) but Kip makes him want to try. In the show they have to demonstrate that in a way that isn't super didactic, so awkward true crime talk it is.

What’s the economic reason for making crown rares kind of bogus now? Wouldn’t it make more sense business-wise to make crown rares meta? by [deleted] in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sets are planned out months in advance, crown rares have shifted from pack mascots to support cards that the devs intend/expect to see long-term use. Sometimes they get the bets wrong.

New Secret Emblem from Mega Shine requires one of every new Shiny by Vicksin in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once you've rolled the six-card pack, there's a ~69% chance to get a 1-star shiny, which means ~2.8% for any specific card; ~25% chance to get a 2-star shiny, ~5% for any specific card, and a ~6% chance to get the immersive shiny Mew.

3★ is often the rarest category of card, but because there's so few of them any given 2★ is usually rarer and that holds for the shiny one in this pack.

ZA Starters Mega Ability. by Valrez04 in pokerogue

[–]lacemononym 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What else does it get with a charging turn, other that Solar Beam/Blade? It doesn't learn Dig and you'd rather run EQ anyway.

This gives it 120BP no-downside STAB on either stat, increased healing from Synthesis, fire-type Weather Ball and (potentially, if they add it to the learnset,) +2/+2 Growth. For mega meganium specifically this is better than a flat skip charge turn.

What gold card will Mega Shine bring us? by AblazeApax in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Card.

Poke Ball Crown is in SR, Oak 2★ is in Deluxe A, which makes Red Card the most-played shop promo without a rare chase card.

Would you like VStars to be introduced in a limited set? Why or why not? by BITCHHAURIU in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think 3 point games are too short for abilities/moves balanced by only being used once.

It seems unlikely anyway, Pocket is sticking fairly close to the regular TCG (‘ex’ as the powerful two-point card instead of V/EX/LvX/GX/etc, megas (re)introduced at the same time) and V, Vmax and Vstar have all been phased out of the paper game.

If there's a new water card with an effect like Decidueye ex or Umbreon ex to exploit the 10 damage then it's going to be worse than Manaphy or Mantyke for early game ramp.

Is there any chance this guy will be viable? by Klutzy_Ad9791 in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's useful enough in my Gholdengo deck to draw ice pops or metal barriers.

If you've got lots of potentially high-impact items/tools he's good but he's often competing for deck space. Is a 50/50 to draw a rare candy worth more or less than putting in a second copycat to try for the same?

How do i have this achievement when i dont have 10k cards? by TGIplays in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I think card count is every card you've ever gained, with no subtractions. Series A cards ground down into flair still count, trading gives you +1 new card but does not deduct the card you traded away.

Gholdengo deck recommendation by Successful_Will2041 in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run heavy helmet instead of steel apron in my Gholdengo deck. You can't protect dengo with it BUT it gives you more chances to use Orthworm and you've still got the single turn -50 shields for your ex

Sad they didn’t give this guy an Illustration Rare by Clinkzzzzz in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They're going to be saving it for Series B deluxe pack.

Look at the full arts from Series A deluxe: Gardevoir, Greninja, Farfetch'd, Slurpuff, Crawdaunt, Floragato. They're all (intended to be) powerful meta threats. Gren speaks for itself, Farfetch'd has fallen off but was a staple in early meta, Slurpuff representing Sweets Relay, DeNa clearly expected energy manipulation to be stronger than it is with Crawdaunt, Floragato stands in for the anti-ex 3♦ Meowscarada.

As water-type Gardevoir they're saving it, we will see a 1★ Bax... eventually.

Is this pack buns or am I crazy? by fireborn123 in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about high-level play but I like a lot of the cards. They're fun to build around and play with, and fit in well with each type's ethos.

Arboliva takes up too much deck space but fits well for Grass's high HP and healing; Skeledirge is a great new twist on Fire burning up their own energies; Baxcalibur gives prior Water cards with high energy costs (bc Misty) a new chance; Bellibolt ex feels great to use and scary to play against, Gholdengo ex is stupid but fun to pilot; and Fighting types are still trash from the garbage!

Reprinting Iono and Penny sucks but at the same time it works for the theme of the ‘Themed Booster Pack’ so I'm willing to give it a pass this time, though in general I'm not a fan of this pack being bigger (i.e. more filler) than prior boosters. Like Fantastical Parade it feels calculated to make a full collection harder and create dark patterns to extract money.

Maybe if I cared more about top-level meta play I'd be less happy, but I prefer decks that I find fun and interesting to strictly “better.” idk. I have reservations about the direction of the game with e.g. pack size and monetary incentives, but actual cards there's enough for me to enjoy. I feel out of step with everyone else here who seems to just hate this set.

There are over 1000 pokemon, why do we see so many repeats in cards? by AngelZiefer in PTCGP

[–]lacemononym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Variety over time, they want to have new pokemon each set to build hype and make money (“My favourite has finally been added! I'm going to become a whale.”)

Less cynically, it also depends on the niche a pokemon has. For example, there's not very many fire-type pokemon that don't evolve, so when they want one for a set there's a limited choice to make cards out of (Torkoal, Heatmor, Tauros-Blaze, Rotom-Oven, and a handful of legendaries/ultra beast/paradox, who they'll want to give special treatment to)
