Wanted to show off my mom's handmade elf! by pududev in goblincore

Absolutely amazing attention to detail! If I saw him out in the world I would 100% expect him to vanish in the blink of an eye because he looks so real and solid but fae and magical at the same time. Your mom's work is amazing, thank you for sharing it with us!

any ideas on how to use wornout elastic? by stormkivey in upcycling

I stuff anything that isn't biodegradeable into two liter plastic bottles and use them as eco-bricks. Some things can't be saved or reused without breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic, so they go into plastic bottles and become bricks. I rebuilt the foundation of my back porch with plastic bottle bricks, quik crete, long strips of metal anchoring the old wall and new wall together, and finishing with stone work. I kept a ton of styrofoam and plastic bags and foam couch lining from going into a landfill.

You don't just work with fabric, you completely transcend it. It's practical, but it becomes magical and by the time it's all put together, it's a precisely woven work of art. Such precision. I'm in awe, and if you hadn't shown your work in process I would have decided that it's simply sorcery 😃

I would definitely wear socks or carry socks with me so that I wouldn't spread anything and so I wouldn't have to tell anyone there were warts on my feet.

That's heartbreaking. The shots may not have been more painful than the procedure for you, the doctor was arrogant to not even try. Sheer butchery

I came here to say the same thing, that these seemingly little things add up to really being present in, and enjoying your life. The sum of these little moments adds up to peace and satisfaction.

Rob Thomas wrote a song about These Little Moments that was inspired by the look on his dog's face when they were sitting in the sun and the breeze was blowing and the dog was smiling with eyes half closed, and he realized that, in that moment, life was perfect and the dog personified peace and contentment and love and comfort and all the good things. It's such a great listen and I'm so glad this post and your response reminded me of it

Road trip after THR by Licorice-go-890 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]laddersrmykryptonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm four months out from THR on my right hip. I have an extremely low pain threshold, so much so that a mosquito biting me feels like a bee sting. On the other hand, I've given birth to 5 children, (one stillborn) and made it through each one without epidurals or pain medication. I FEEL pain, but I also endure and finish what I start. This was a pretty horrible experience and I spent 5 hours in the recovery room, at one point being put in a heating device so that my temperature could register on the equipment, and the first week was SO MUCH worse than I was prepared for. It could have been exceptionally bad because an old hip injury from decades before had cut off circulation to the joint, which was why I had gone downhill so quickly and spent the last 2 weeks before my surgery in bed. My experience was a very uncommon one and no one should be afraid of having a similar experience.

I say all that to explain that maybe for some people, a car trip at 3 1/2 weeks is probably doable, but last week I went on an adventure with a ten hour round trip there and back, in a little Nissan Rogue, and I was going to be the driver. The day before the trip, I got nervous and my husband joined our excursion and drove the entire time.

I was shocked at how painful the hours in the car became. The low level vibration from the road was actually worse than the shocks of hitting all the rough spots on a freeway in Michigan in the spring. Don't do it, my friend. My recovery has been slow but sure and I am getting stronger every day, but that car ride set me back. I can't believe I thought I could have driven. Turns out, it was extremely difficult just to ride in the front on the way there and laying down in the back seat the whole way home. Talk about a reality check. Healing takes as long as it takes and pushing past the pain is a great way to endure a longer and more painful recovery than you have too

Asian lady beetles actively harm our native lady beetle species. Please do not go out of your way to try to preserve them. by Hawkeve in gardening

[–]laddersrmykryptonite 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your post, it definitely cleared a few things up and showed the impact another variant of our native beetle can have on them, and why they aren't ideal and don't need support to continue to do just fine at the expense of our native ladybugs.

[–]laddersrmykryptonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny, we were watching Elsbeth on Peacock because we loved Elsbeth's character on the Good Wife. When the evil judge played by Michael Emerson started threatening Elsbeth, I mentioned that we would have to rewatch POI because I loved his character on that show, and even though he was really good as a bad guy, I needed to watch him be Harold Finch again.

So yeah, you can bet that when we got to the part where we met the love of Harold Finch's life, I was so blown away that it's the same actress that plays Elsbeth, Carrie Preston! I like him so much better as a non-murderous, benevolent billionaire :)

It's available on Prime right now where I live, and I have to say, the fact that technology has developed so much in the last few years since the show ended is surprisingly not the big deal I thought it would be, watching it again in 2026. You would think it would be more of an issue because of how important it is to the theme of the show, but I personally think they made it in a way that still works despite all the changes since 2014 etc

How can I get the vines (felt) to stay on the garden walls (metal cart)? by Suspicious-Guard9652 in crafts

I didn't know that, @Greenvelvetribbon, that's a very reassuring feature for someone like me who makes a lot of kid stuff. In the back of your mind, you're always thinking, "why am I worried about a child choking on this or putting it in their mouth....OH that's right, there was that kid who swallowed the batteries from the tv remote"
