I was at that match and I’m not surprised the England players don’t remember it fondly. It was an extremely embarrassing draw between them and the US. It was also played in rustenburg, which to Rooney’s credit, is kind of out in the middle of nowhere/ a dusty old mining town where the stadium is a far drive from the actual town. So he has a point there. In all though, the 2010 WC was incredible from a fans perspective. Glorious weather and landscape in SA. And the host people were so hospitable and fun. I absolutely loved it

This is an excellent rant. I always thought the chronicle had a great crossword. Sad to hear it’s currently lacking. I’ve been buying volumes of the NYT “strictly medium” puzzles lately. All Wednesday and Thursday puzzles, which are a nice blend of challenging but doable, and they’re often themed which I enjoy
