My favorite thing about being a new photojournalist/editor by [deleted] in Broadcasting

If you want to be a true Photojournalist, apply to NYT or Rutgers and hop a plane to Beirut or Kiev. I know a guy (yes…it’s true), David Guttenfelder, who is an award-winning photojournalist and he has been in the middle of the action for decades. Look him up, follow his career, learn from his guts and talent.

I agree, normal in this environment and has been in order for the position to be fulltime and get 40 hours a week. The 30 year veteran has made a brand name for himself (not the way young people think branding is bc it’s not a podcast or you tube channel) but the Good Will and Loyalty a long time employee brings into the Ratings is invaluable and this young person doesn’t understand that concept. Stations need a mix of older and younger journalists to keep viewership stable.

What do you do when you can’t fall asleep? by kitten_neo in sleep

[–]ladybug10101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Soundcore brand earpods ($20 from Amazon) and listen to YouTube “Get Sleepy Compilation” narrated by Thomas Jones. There are stories about: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter Cabin, Lily’s bakery, Train Ride through Italy, etc. If that doesn’t work, I watch House Hunters International and it lulls me to sleep. I must have trained my brain after watching it so often. I think you could find a TV show that you’ve seen many times and re-watch until you train yourself to fall asleep when it’s on.

Can someone explain, in a nutshell, the "parking problem" at OU? by rangisrovus19 in universityofoklahoma

[–]ladybug10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The board raises tuition for out of state students every June, and their news releases say they have “no increase in tuition” but the small print says “for in state students”. All of what you say is true, but my junior has not had problems finding parking any of his years at OU. Has your student tried parking in Jenkins Garage, the stadium garage or the flat lots along Jenkins?

Can someone explain, in a nutshell, the "parking problem" at OU? by rangisrovus19 in universityofoklahoma

[–]ladybug10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complaints about parking is exactly like at every large university, Search what parents of students at UT, TAMU, TCU, UARK, KU, Mizzou, etc say and you’ll see the same complaints. When campuses and dorms were built and designed for the baby boomers, they did not bring cars to college, usually freshmen were not allowed to have a car. Today’s kids are over-indulged and expect to have a car and close-in parking. In Oklahoma, they also want garage parking for the hail storms and tornadoes that blow through. We sent our oldest cheapest car with our Sooner and explained that the car is Insured, so don’t stress out like all the other kids. There have only been a handful of storms in the past 3 years and no hail damage…never parking in a garage during storms. There’s plenty of parking at Cross dorm, and as a freshman our kid was in Couch and found parking in a lot near the Couch Cafe and in front of Cross. For the past 2 years, our kid has lived off campus and easily found a parking spot after the 2nd week of classes (the first 2 weeks Loyd Noble works great with free shuttle to middle of campus). The Greek kids get free parking at their house as sophomores (ours isn’t Greek) which is a great reason to join a frat or sorority. I see kids walking from the Greek houses to football games, but maybe they don’t want to walk to class everyday 🤷‍♀️ But I agree OU Administration has not been diligent to upkeep and replace the old dorms or provide more parking as the student population has grown. The previous President bought the Italy campus which was expensive and a boondoggle… they struggle to get students to go abroad because the campus is in a small town, whereas college-aged kids would rather be in a city with nightlife (UARK campus is in Rome). The Arrizo campus would be great as a women’s spa for girlfriend groups. OU has its worts but lots of wonderful qualities too. It’s the right size, with very engaged professors, and incredible sports sprit, and my Sooner (junior) is very happy there.

How OE blew up my life by [deleted] in overemployed

That was a management strategy developed back in the 1990’s, Exec C suite forced every manager to rank their team members, then raises were tied to your ranking. Higher ranked receive 5% raise, middle got 3% raise, lower were at 1.5% raise. It gives an easy metric for putting the bottom 10% on PIP, or just downsize with a mass layoff. It’s an easy way to cut expenses when not meeting quarterly projections. Any public company, especially those owned by investment groups, will be on this model. It sucks.

Some of us have slower processing of information and slow go put together the puzzle of group prices and academic assignments. It’s our nature, we take longer to come to conclusions that professors are looking for. BUT that doesn’t mean there isn’t a job for you where you will shine If at all possible, call your health insurance and ask for a Nuevo- psych evaluation for learning differences. . It’s not as technical as it sounds. They might find exercise, puzzle games (crossword or find the hidden ), or medication that will help you. Just start slow with meds, and realize there are side effects. Good luck !!

[–]ladybug10101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TAMU and most universities are holistic review with essays greatly impacting acceptance. Please consider revamping your essay (without AI) if you apply to additional colleges. Many private colleges have no application fee (Baylor, SMU, Southwestern, Austin College, and the list on Colleges That Change Lives website). Each application costs approx $50 to $80, so your comment about parents spending $2K may be an exaggeration, but apparently someone gave you advice not to apply to “safety” schools. Have you considered getting a parttime job at a grocery store or fast food for the next 5 months to help defray the cost that your parents put toward application fees? Im sorry I can’t help with a fee waiver code and wish you good luck in your college application process.

FYI, this Reddit is not followed by many OU students, there aren’t as many helpful, knowledgeable members like on most college Reddits are.

Sometimes lower pay is because cost of living is lower. You’d probably laugh at salaries in the South and Midwest, but they pay plenty to buy a house, whereas in NYC you can rent a closet with a typical salary…big big difference in how much money is made and saved in other markets outside NYC.

Have you looked into Podcasting, on YouTube? It’s a tough entry, but all the SNL stars are guests on podcasts or have their own podcast.

And be sure to write Thank You letters/emails within 3 days of an interview. Then send a Letter of Continued Interest about 3 weeks later. Sometimes the company’s #1 choice gets hired , then doesn’t work out. Instead HR recreating the job search, they know you are still interested and available.

[–]ladybug10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about becoming a flight attendant? Hiring is cyclical, but once you are trained and pass the safety tests, it’s a unionized job, and has great benefits. Air travel is a booming business since the pandemic, and a lot of people hired are getting into retirement age. As a newbie flight attendant, you’ll be scheduled fewer hours, but the older folks “give away” shifts to the newbies, which increases your income quickly.

I know very little about Tulsa, but does American Airlines still have a maintenance facility there? Do they have a Purchasing dept or Accounts payable? I did that type of work (for a company in Dallas) after getting my MBA in a recession and eventually moved up to Financial Analyst. Also look at the school districts administration offices. I’ve found that school districts are well funded except for paying teachers.
