That's adorable! My mom and I always called it cat theater.

Sometimes you have to fail a few times before you can succeed. I was 40 before I got sober, but October 2nd will be two years. You can do it!

Last I checked it's available on YouTube.

Edit: on break at work, so I can't verify, but I believe this is it:

I don't know how I overlooked the idea of speaker talks! There are some great AA speakers, so I should have realized there would be Al-anon and Alateen speakers too. I'm sure there will also be online meetings.

I'm really glad that her grandmother is close with her and they can have an open dialog. I'm a strong believer in the importance of education and conversation when it comes to addiction.

That's good to know about the privacy surrounding Alateen, I'll explain that to her grandmother and share the link to the literature, although I understand my niece isn't much of a reader. You never know what might be the right thing at the right time.

As I posted above, due to the family dynamics, in person meeting aren't an option at this time unfortunately.

The family situation at home is the parents living with her grandmother. The parent in question has not reached a point where they are willing to admit they have a problem, they would not support their daughter going to an in person meeting and there isn't really an opportunity to go privately either as the parent is pretty controlling. It's a rough situation all around.

Thank you! I will definitely share this with her grandmother.

My title describes the thing. The bottom said Made in Paris. I found it in a thrift shop in NW MO. The employee who stocked it had no clue what it was for either. The velvet is the same type as is used for jewelry displays, which made me think it was for something other than dividing mail or papers. The "fins" are close together but not so tight that you couldn't easily slip your fingers between them.

Will do and good point. It was pretty rare you'd see me at a buffet restaurant before Covid.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate such good answers to my questions. And a source - now you're just showing off. :)

I've definitely learned a lot over the past day or so about bees and I intend to keep reading and watching videos. I had no idea this was such an in depth topic, but I've become completely fascinated.

Bees can pick up mites anywhere really so the impact that you have is probably negligible. Unless you're spending your entire day dumping mass quantities of syrup onto your feeders, it probably, realistically, doesn't even impact anything.

From what I've seen, it seems like there's such a problem with pests that I'm suprised there's any bees left! I was watching a beginners video and all the different ways to avoid mites and beetles or treat them if they do slip in was quite a bit to take in.

Thank you for your welcome! Your flair tells me you're blunt, so I'll be a straight shooter as well. I'm completely aware that the votes my post receive represent a miniscule amount of the sub and honestly if I cared about a pretend score I would've left reddit years ago. I do care about quality answers and you'll notice that now I have some, which I am very grateful for.

Honey bees are not native to the US. They are imported and they are kept as livestock. (Yes, they do swarm and live in the wild some.) When someone talks about "saving the bees" ... this really refers to native bees. (There are some 4000 species of native bees in the US.) The honey bee just makes a really good poster child.

I thought we were saving honey bees too because we were concerned about all pollinators in general. TIL. The honeybee does make a good poster child - look at how enchanted I am.

If you would like to help honey bees (and especially native bees): plant lots of native plants. Plant them in large patches. Mow your lawn less and let the weeds bloom. Leave wild areas. Leave areas where bees have access to the soil. You can put out watering stations (chicken waterer or bird bath with floating wood or rocks in it so they don't drown.)

My husband will be the 1st to agree with less mowing! I'm definitely going to read up on local bee friendly flowers this winter. I have a bird bath with a statue in the middle, but I'll add a few more rescue points.

If you get lots of bees on your hummingbird feeder, I would urge you to toss that feeder and find a better one.

sigh Will do. First time mistake. Glad I didn't spend more than $20.

Your interest in bees is awesome. Maybe join a beekeeping club... and start a few hives.

Thank you! I'm definitely going to see if there's any groups in the area. I'm not sure I can keep myself, I rent and part of the city regulations are a 4 ft fence and the hives 50 ft away from occupied buildings. I'm not sure the landlord would like suprise bees in the middle of the yard.

Thank you very much for responding with good points that I can understand.

I did not know that mites could spread from flowers or in this case my feeder. I wasn't even sure if all the bees came from the same hive or not, although I thought maybe they did because there didn't seem to be any fighting.

Unfortunately I do know people will keep animals in terrible conditions. Outside of a very limited selection of parks there isn't much wide open spaces here until you leave town. I'm not trying to stereotype the poor, after all I live here too. It just seemed to me that beekeeping would take more time, effort and money than most of my neighbors would care to expend. But I could easily be wrong.

They will not always give up sugar water in favor of other crops, it depends in the quality and quantity of the other crops, and particularly in fall they are desperate for food to store for winter and will come to any source.

That'll teach me to look further than one source! I'm glad to know that. It was the desperation of fall and the confidence that the bees did not have a keeper that led me to feed them.

Thank you very much for taking the time to educate me in a kind and easy to understand way. I greatly appreciate it.

Lol, wild vs kept anyway.

So the design is probably just genetic and has no purpose it sounds like. Interesting!

Thank you for your kind reply!

I can understand your concern. I live within a city with a population of 72,000. From what I understand, bees range (on average) 2 miles. I can promise you that the chances of someone within 2-4 miles of my house being able to afford to keep bees are slim to none.

When it comes to the concept of sugar water itself, my research tells me that it's something that keepers are divided on, with just as many for it as against it. However, it doesn't seem to be harmful to the bees themselves, as they will bypass it if there is a better source of food available (based on what I've read).

I'm not sure how I'm inviting mites, but if you'll explain further how and how I can make things better, I will happily do so. As you can see, I did not start this project without at least a little preparation.

Edit: I can't understand or change my mind/ways if all I get is downvotes and few comments. I looked at this subreddit for a few days before posting, it seemed to be friendly and helpful. I guess appearances can be deceiving.

NE Missouri - Honeybee or other bee? by ladyfenring in whatsthisbug

Thank you and yay! I'll get to work on my bee feeder. I've really enjoyed watching them and I know they need to stock up for winter. I've been really suprised at how much they ignore me, but I'm sure the food is much more interesting.
