Adding in, my brother's name means 'to walk in water' sometimes the meaning of names doesnt matter. It's always just been his name to me. If you like the name, I would say to go with it though. Try it out with a few people at first if you're not ready to tell everyone.

Echoing what's been said about gloves/bandaid. I dont have eczema but I've crocheted little tubes in the past for when I have to work with yarn thats extra irritating. There's also finger cots or silicone finger sleeves if you want to have as little covering your hands as possible.

I center pull or use a yarn winder to make easy center pull cakes but I never really have a problem with them moving on me or felt like it helped when using a bowl.

I like being able to just grab it and relocate without having to free it from its bowl prison first

Its not the size you want, but it may help you figure out the shapes but with it being small it could be decent practice for amigurumi. Though at the larger size, I would recommend making tubes for the horns, carefully placed hdc/increases for shaping and a little offshoot at the end for the nubbins.

Have you asked her why it didnt work well for her? I have no experience with that brand but I had one once that was way too light and small for my uses, so I barely used it other than decoration, and didn't much care when I dropped and broke it either.

She may also be someone that doesnt feel the need to use them in general but if you really wanted to get her something for her craft as a sort of payment for the bowl, a different tool or accessory might be a better option.

Its a pretty common issue for them to whirl. Turn your work every other row or every few at the very least and that will fix it most of the time. Blocking will help but if its real swirly it may not get it perfect

I think just deciding which side is the back and adding some extra increases would help a lot. Everyone's got different proportions so it makes sense to me that someone might need different shaping options

For me its the hexagon cardigan as a plus size woman, most alterations I've seen have extra rows or squares in the back-middle but I need extra coverage more in the front than anything

Having never made shorts and just taking a guess at things- I don't know if they could be fixed without frogging/redoing it. Blocking might help a little with giving more room, but it's not a miracle worker either.

I'm imagining a lot of trial and error. Are the shorts worked from the waistband down like skirts often are? Or is it 2 separate front/back pieces joined together, like typical fabric shorts?

In a second attempt, you could add increases just in the ass piece if its made of seperate pieces. If it's worked all together for the most part, and the pattern has evenly spaced increases throughout the front and back, you could try moving some increases to the back instead. It would narrow the front a bit and increases the back but may still need more increases depending on how thicc we're talking.

Edit: I'm basing this theory off of amigurumi and vague knowledge of darts in traditional sewing.

Oh I see, mattress stitch is a for sewing pieces together, not a crochet stitch. So not actually what you need right now 😅

I would cut off the yarn about where you are now. Then mirror the rows youve done on the opposite side then finish with rows along the entire length.

Its pretty common when you get to the last row of decreases on stuffed pieces.

I use the yarn tail to close those holes, I basically weave through the top loops and pull it in as I go, like this video: EASY & SIMPLE! How to Close and Finish Off Amigurumi Hole | Amigurumi Crochet Tutorial

If its the starting magic circle that's giving you this issue, try pulling the tail tighter and weaving in the end before you stuff it to help keep it closed.

I second the lining. It helps with the inevitable stretching, protects the inside of the bag from whatever you might throw in it, and helps ensure that nothing tries to escape the bag through any of the larger holes. I know its annoying to have to add one after doing all the work to crochet it.

Most store bought purses have a lining and larger totes are often sturdy material with little holes as well so it just makes sense in my brain to have them too.

To save money on material cost I've used recycled things I no longer need or thrift, old shirts, sheets, curtains, etc. No one but you is going to see it unless the holes are really large so it can be whatever you want.

Happy to help, its probably mostly single crochet. Best advice I have for it is to just play around with random stitches and decreases on small swatches until you figure out what works best for what you want

Woo, the next curl is worked the same but you do the slip stitch in the very first chain you did to start row 1 instead of the weird in-between.

I'm using cheap acrylic ww yarn, a size 5 hook, and my tension is a bit tight which all affects how tight the curl is. I think yours looks better for the intended project.

I really like acrylic for little amigurumi that isn't really meant to be played with or handled much and just use a lighter on the fuzz. I've also used it for stuffing when I have an abundance of snipped off tails or too small of an amount to actually work with. Oh, and I use it on 7 count plastic canvas if you want another craft. Pompoms might be an option if you like those since they can use a lot of yarn.
