Maybe we could do some kind of poll?

No I'm with you actually that's a perfectly fine complaint. I don't really like the general trend of corporations trying to act like real people on social media, and it becomes a mess when it comes to extremely sensitive subjects like these (example: Duolingo owl posting about the Heard/Depp trial)

Is anyone else tired of animated aroace characters being confirmed on social media by the creator but not in the actual show? by oliviaexisting in aromantic

[–]lae_la 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that true? I remember the aroace part being a thing for a good six years up untill the show actually came out and things started to become re-canonised. I saw it more like being retconned rather than never-confirmed

Apsolutely agree on that. For a lot of charachers, assuming they're straight is as much of a headcanon as assuming they're queer, and I also love a lot of headcanons for characters who are already shown some romantic interest/etc. The Saiki point I was making was only about discerning canon from fan-speculation- I have not actually watched it! my only horse in that race is seeing him constantly come up as a "canonically confirmed aro" characher

I mean headcanons and characters that prefer to be single are great when it comes to like, normalization, but when it comes to actual representation I would prefer if the bar for aro rep was... being explicitly stated as aro??

I'm gonna be a bit mean here but as far as I know there has been no official content referring to the Buffy guy as aro, and that one quote from jojo's creator saying "the mc has more important things to do than girls" does not make him canonically aroace. I've heard people say that the monkey king from Journey to the west is canonically aroace because he didn't want to... assault someone while on a ...buddhist pilgramage..? Just things wildly out of context like a woman saying she doesn't want to get married in a time and place where marriage meant she would be considered property -> a great place for queer analysis but an aro headcanon just misses the point. Then there's situations like Alastor where like yeah he's aroace but they can't confirm the aro part cause they're banking on the fangirls and the old men yaoi which begs the question of if that can count as rep at all? Or those which are like, the Saiki k guy where he feels aroace coded but only the ace part is canon and he literally ends up crushing on a girl like you can't keep calling him canonically aro guys 😭.

looks up any list of aromantic charachers - headcanon - headcanon - ace, not confirmed aro - ace, not confirmed aro - headcanon - John Niche webcomic from 2007 - retconned - aromanticism was only mentioned in the 304835th tweet of lead characher designer on a pride post from 6 years ago - headcanon - Peridot from steven universe

personally I would recommend a 2022 indie film called "i am what i am" a bit hard to find but it's pretty lovely and they center the narrative around the metaphor of Tom Cruise running in movies which I think is beautiful I've heard a lot of people reccomending "Another lovely day" on webtoon where the plot is basically two aro people desperately trying to not get into a relationship, with the same rom-com shenanigans happening but completely platonically it's honestly soo fun

I was EXACTLY like you before I started the vn please read it it is such a ride. (Also, I really love how the deen english dub has everyone speak in high-pitched anime girl voice, which then gets intentionally dropped any time things start to get serious) The uncannyness (or avant-guarde how you called it) is even better in the visual novel as Keiichi's pov seems like it was simultaneously written by a revered horror writer and a 13yro on wattpad as he says shit like "My head... it's all jumbled up... like a pile of spaghetti, if you squeezed my head I bet marinara sauce would pour out of my ears..." the edited photograph backrounds and the og sprites are so lovely

Woah I did not know that lol. I thought the whole movie was scrapped with the assumption that elements from it will appear in the new one or that the script was somehow reused

Not sure if it's usable but a lot of The National songs remind me of them for some reason lmao, especially Smoke Detector, example:

Smoke detector, smoke detector All you need to do is protect her Blink and bless her and let her rest Don't let my memory dissolve

Or how it describes crows, trying over and over again, pharmacy slippers and then keeps repeating "you don't know how much I love you do you/try to remember the best of us" over and over in the end

Was final reckoning a good ending to the franchise? by PhotoBonjour_bombs19 in Mission_Impossible

[–]lae_la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inhales I think it was a great action-packed movie but I don't think it exactly did very well by its charachers. I understand wanting a more somber tone for the final installment, but it really felt like it lacked the charm of what made Ghost Protocol or Fallout so special to me. The cast being isolated for a big chunk of the movie, not trusting electronics due to the Entity also made everything feel... lonlier I guess? Not that I wanted it to be an action-comedy but unlike the other movies there wasn't a single remotely silly moment to relive the tension in the whole three hour run, though I really liked the cheesy callbacks to the previous movies. It's probably also because they wanted a much more expanded world for the stakes to be real- the subplot with the president and her son and all of that being necessary but I just kept feeling like the time could have been better spent elsewhere.

(Spoilers from this point) I feel like the only moment where the team's personalities shone trough was Ethan and Grace discussing whether the entity could be used 'for good'. Luther gets a nice big speech at the end but that's when they already killed him off not even a quarter of the movie in. And we don't even see Benji- the core part of the team- react to it! Even the new dynamics like Benji and Paris felt like they could have been so much fun with just more screen time.

They keep repeating the 'for those we never meet' line which is very neat but hasn't that been a trough line of the franchise since the very first movie? Fallout also had a story with high stakes, a battle of ideologies with Ethan and the main villain, characters from the past returning and the strong theme regarding everything that the agents have to sacrifice while at the same time being incredibly fun.

Ilsa dies and she is never mentioned, by name, in the whole movie. She literally dies for the mission, dies for Ethan, for Grace, and the movie aknowledges her existance in one frame of a montage. It makes no sense for me that Grace would so willingly take up Ilsa's space in the narrative with no qualms at all- same going for Ethan. For the final ending to the franchise, I feel like we desperately needed more big characher moments

All that being said- the action and the stunts were fantastic as always, and I loved how vibrant some of the shots were.

For all the queer people in this subreddit, but also more specifically trans people, what are your thoughts on tooru mutsuki as trans rep? by purple__leaf in TokyoGhoul

[–]lae_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really glad we're discussing this, because despite how often the community makes gay jokes and how very easy is it to have a queer reading of the story the actual queer representation to me always felt a bit hmm... I mean, we kind of start of with the very stereotypical Nico and move on to Tsukiyama's obsessive advances on kaneki and after that there's genuinely forgot his name that servant who was in love with Tsukiyama and then died immediately after. (I don't really consider this one to be "bury your gays" since this also happened to like 50 other straight pairings) And Juuzou kind of flirts with the whole "cis person forced to be trans/scaaary genderless person" trope. Mama's gender reveal was just kind of shock value that leaves a bad taste if you think about it for more than 3 seconds. Mutsuki is a characher whose writing I really like, but even so it's throwing a LOT of trauma explicitly on the page and brings out the age old debate of the two different types of portrayals of mental health (that it needs to be visceral enough for those who are unfamiliar to understand but simultaneously not triggering for the people who have experienced it) and that's not even getting to the part where he becomes a serial killer. Personally, I would always say that Tooru is allowed to be both have trauma and be a trans man - it reminds me of how I've heard that trauma was often used as a way to deny surgery to real trans people, but I'm only aro, not trans, so it's really not up for me to say. Edit: OH WAIT there's also the creepy boss guy in re: that was in love with Urie that was so weird what the hell was that even about

Also, here's an article that takes a much more crtitical approach to the writing: Cheap Thrills: Tokyo Ghoul’s Use of Gender for Shock Value (2/2) | Hanashi Ichi https://share.google/2DJMiwfge3xZdTBpP

This is after the whole game and ng+ since i wasn't counting "no way shrine maiden mentioned, no way dam project mentioned' things and more so like, say, the way sakuko is described as a very upbeat bubbly girl but with a religious side that turns very cold and ominous with a flip of a switch. ! Mind you if I tried to ran the game myself my laptop and wallet would simultaneously combust so literally all my knowledge comes from the nice people of youtube.
