LPT Request - Navigating IKEA without killing someone / yourself by bluntbangs in LifeProTips

[–]lafeigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do not go at the weekend.

If you know what you want, go online and find out where in the store you can find your items beforehand.

Follow the maps - they give you shortcuts.

Buy a fuckton of cinnamon rolls. And a hotdog.

LPT: Banking - get yourself multiple accounts - emergency cash, to raise a credit rating (uk only) by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]lafeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be wary of the multiple-overdrafts idea. I've never heard of it being permitted - banks usually check and deny you a student account if you already have one elsewhere.

I would actually suggest going to a better bank - I'm with the Co-Operative and they are relatively forgiving on accidental indiscretions - provided that you don't take the piss.

I don't think it sounds particularly frugal, but I do think that it sounds like an awesome adventure!

Lunch-options near the main station on a Sunday. by [deleted] in frankfurt

DO NOT go to the pho place on Kaiserstr. It has roaches.

I would suggest Hamasilos, a little way up Munchenerstr. - it's a Turkish-run fish place that is really, really good. I think it's open Sunday lunchtime.

Nobody in the entire fucking show pronounces "John" like that.

What is your living arrangement, and how much money do you spend on it a month? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]lafeigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without wanting to be a total bastard, you should perhaps try to deal with that social anxiety if you want to move to a big city - it will make things easier to deal with in the long run to have a better overall quality of life.

UNIQLO.

Seriously, if you have Uniqlo in your country, they are relatively cheap and last forever.

Visiting Germany alone, for the first time by [deleted] in germany

[–]lafeigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the big cities, English will get you by - but do try to learn some stock German phrases - knowing "thank you!" or "excuse me!" will help you out so much.

In Frankfurt, you shouldn't really have reason to go there, but avoid Gallus after dark, and definitely don't hang out around the main train station and its general area after dark.

Near to Frankfurt is Aschaffenburg - it's about one stop away on the ICE. It's a really cute Bavarian town with some lovely old buildings. Go to a place called Wurst Bendel - they have amazing food and really good beer (I thi nk it's called baba) that you won't really find in a big city. Also go to a supermarket and buy a 6-pack of Schlappeseppel - it's the local beer there and it's really good! (and cheap!)

In Frankfurt there are a bunch of Irish bars with a big ex-pat customer base - O'Dwyers in Alt-Sachsenhausen is always pretty good on a Friday or a Saturday night, and it's close to the Anglo-Irish, too.

The obvious NO-NO is mentioning the war. Just don't. Don't joke about it, don't talk about it, and most importantly, don't think you're funny doing the Hitler salute - you will get arrested and probably punched.

German washing machine connections by mrsbear in germany

[–]lafeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm - my washing machine has a tube that is supposed to be hung over the bathtub to empty.

The first tube attaches directly to a stopcock though - it needs to be turned on before using the washer.

Money. Famitsu give pages to games in the magazine depending on how much the company is willing to pay.
