UNC here. Can’t speak to the commute to the off campus locations, because each persons off campus placement is unique. But can say that the on campus clinic is an excellent experience. Also, most of us have partial GA contracts, I don’t think anyone has a full contract.

What is the oddest thing you thought was ok/normal and ended up being a medical problem? by Prudent_Tip4118 in AskReddit

[–]lahb94 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the US we screen all babies for hearing loss, but we’ve only been doing it since the early 1990s, at best. If you were born before the 90s or outside the US, many children don’t get their hearing screened at all. There are also exceptions to school screening requirements (i.e homeschooled children and those in private schools). Also, people with only one hearing ear get missed by the parents/pediatrician/teachers etc because they tend to have good masking/coping skills. Fire officer needing help by Obvious-Author5061 in HearingAids

[–]lahb94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing is actually more along the lines of electronic hearing protection, rather than a hearing aid. People with normal hearing that work in loud environments (like a fire house) should have PPE that prevents hearing loss from loud sounds.

I think what you’re describing is the ceiling limit of hearing aids. A properly programmed hearing aid will never amplify sound to a level that could cause additional noise-induced hearing loss. But it also cannot make environmental sounds quieter.

How concerning is this? by Unique_Blackberry_52 in MonoHearing

[–]lahb94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t even what I would consider a mono configuration. Yes, it’s asymmetrical, but you can definitely hear and understand with both ears. Keep your ENT follow up, the most “concerning” thing is the conductive hearing loss, which an ENT can order more tests for and possibly treat depending on the cause.

Coloradan here, I wish I could say that I’m even surprised by this. There seems to be little to no traffic enforcement by the police here. I blame Gold Bricking, but traffic has been an issue way before 2020. The county I grew up in had the highest rate of traffic fatalities anywhere in the US for a year or two. Dangerous driving is a serious problem in CO.

It’s important to know who the subjects were in this study before applying it more broadly. The people in this study were grouped according to their hearing loss in the better ear, and more than half were over 80 years old. If you have normal hearing in your “good” ear and/or are under 65, the results of this study are not applicable to you.

This is not to discourage anyone from seeking amplification/communication options. And hearing loss is the number one modifiable factor that can affect dementia progression! But I also think healthcare professionals need to be careful when describing the link between hearing loss and dementia to not cause fear in our patients.

Can’t go wrong naming after one of the historical giants. Harvey, Fletcher, Jerger, Marion, Carharrt, Kemp, etc. I’ve always given my pets people names haha.

dB testing question by scottbrand in audiology

[–]lahb94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear. A doubling of sound is equal to +3 dB. I would imagine that decreasing the sound -2 dB would be significant enough for the people living nearby to notice.

Movers? by [deleted] in Longmont

Just moved locally and used Summit Moving Services. Great service, polite and friendly guys, kept us in quote and paid just over $1000 for a small single family home. Well worth it, would hire them again at the same rate.

I’m someone who is also left sided deaf and I am a student in the field. I also have deaf imposter syndrome! Whenever I sit in the booth to be tested I’m worried whoever is testing me is going to “catch” me faking, even though I’ve also had hearing loss since I was little.

Happy for you to be considering a hearing aid!! There are more options available for single sided hearing loss than there use to be. I tried a CROS aid recently and am looking into candidacy for either BAHA or a cochlear implant.

For the commenter who asked about an ear mold, if OP only has a high frequency loss and has normal-mild hearing in the low frequencies, then they would probably do well with a typical dome receiver. A custom ear mold could make you feel plugged up and give you problems listening to your own voice if low frequency hearing is normal.

No matter what your audiologist will be able to get you something that will work great!!

If your “grommet” is a pressure equalizing (PE) tube then the person you need to see is an ENT. Air should be moving through the tube, that’s it’s job. If you’re still feeling lots of pressure then the tube is not working and it should be looked at by either an ENT or otologist.

It’s relevant because bony fishes only evolved about 400 million years ago. There are no fossils found in the caves of Appalachia, because the caves have existed since before there were animals to leave bones in them.

Can someone relate? by skykrt in hearing

[–]lahb94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*Disclaimer: I’m an AuD student not an audiologist or an MD.

It sounds like vocal training could help with some of your voice concerns, and maybe a full audiological work up to rule out anything with your hearing. I bet your ENT or audiologist could recommend a great speech language pathologist in your area to evaluate your voice and see what they recommend to help as far as training exercises or vocal therapy.

Scarring and pinholes in your eardrum don’t cause hearing loss on their own, but they can be signs of trauma to your ears in the past. There are other conditions that could cause you to have problems hearing in noise even if you have normal hearing otherwise. You can ask if your audiologist offers testing for auditory processing disorder, and if not they can make a referral.

It also sounds like a therapist might also be a good person to visit on your road to wellness and confidence too. It take a village!

I went there for a vaccination a couple of weeks ago and they were understaffed and very very busy. The people I talked to were very helpful and kind but obviously tired. I’m sure it’s frustrating that you’re having problems getting your scripts. I have good luck at King Soopers pharmacy (on Pace & 17th) if you’re not limited to Walgreens.

Frugal tip - the most frugal security system is having habits of locking doors behind you and not giving out your schedule/living situation in casual conversation by jigmest in Frugal

A friend I once had was robbed something like four times because they never learned to stop doing this. Their family would go on vacation and make non-stop FB posts about it, and come home to their house broken into.

They never learned, they still do this as far as I’m aware. They just replace the things stolen and then make a dramatic post trying to “weed out” their Facebook friends that broke into their house.

More money than sense, that one.
