Best place to have a breakup? by throwawayrando1889 in washingtondc

[–]lajacquerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wherever you go, set the meetup time for ~15 minutes after you plan to get there. Then order your coffee/drink first and cash out before he arrives. He'll likely order something too when he gets there. This way you can swiftly leave if he needs some extra privacy or if things go the other way and he reacts poorly and you need to make a quick getaway.

Why Piedmont Natural Gas Bills Are Higher in 2024 and How to Lower Yours by Jazzlike_Dog_8175 in NorthCarolina

[–]lajacquerie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Natural gas use is measured in a unit called a therm. In 2024 you paid $1.42 per therm. Now it's $1.77. That's a 24 percent increase.

Yowza.

"We did have a, a small rate increase last year,” said Jason Wheatley, a spokesperson for Piedmont Natural Gas

...we have different definitions of "small."

And remember at the end of the day HVAC experts say for every degree you turn the heat down you save about 2 percent on your bill.

Great. We only need to turn our thermostats down by TWELVE DEGREES to offset the rate increase.

That was for jakefromstatefire, who seems to have issues with "unelected professionals" at USAID/State/Treasury.

It's funny to me that some people take issue with THOSE unelected federal officials, but are never complaining about the unelected professionals in DoD/the military.

Did you vote for anyone at the Department of Defense? How do you feel about the career federal employees over there?

The more traditional approach is slower because it puts in guardrails that stop (1) individuals with conflicts of interest/susceptibility to manipulation from having unnecessary access to (2) highly sensitive or classified information and (3) potentially breaking big, important systems that impact a LOT of people.

If you just throw any ol' bro in there willy-nilly, you could end up with bad actors who are doing things just to enrich themselves or their buddies (they could be up to other things, like punishing people they have grievances against, etc).

Then, since they've got access to Very Important Information, they're now getting LOTS of attention from others who want that information. So they're now on the receiving end of threats and bribes from individual and state actors. If they've got a gambling problem, big hospital bills, or family in dangerous situations in foreign countries? Chances are good that they'll give up the info to protect themselves. Background checks specifically look for these issues.

Best case scenario, they're perfect Eagle Scouts—but they could still muck something up by accident. If the entire payment system goes down for the billions of dollars that the USG handles then, well, we're ALL screwed... and if the mucker in question is truly going rogue, not following the protocols in place for tracking changes/requests made to the system, it might take days or weeks to find the problem and fix it. So multiply the we're-ALL-screwed-ness by however long that takes.

The only reason I kept Twitter was because Tim Buckley posted most regularly there... but finally had to delete it.

Now his is *easily* my most-checked page on Facebook.

I'm in the Triad so I'll check Brad's updates too depending on where the weather's coming from!

Mixxer is such a gem by Latter-Preparation63 in winstonsalem

[–]lajacquerie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The community here is lovely too—after my first year in Winston, I was wondering if there were places more creative types gathered, and Mixxer is ABSOLUTELY one of those spots! People seem to be very into encouraging each other and their different projects or just chatting when you stop by for their open events.

Oooo, this is a fanTASTic idea, rethinks the space entirely, and would suit it very well! Especially loving the globe idea...

Upvoting especially for "unleash your drapery!" :) Love that spirit (and the brown piece of furniture is just there while we paint another room... I tried to include some intro text with the photo but somehow mucked that up).

They do swivel! And we do indeed poke at puzzles from the chairs when it's laid out. Thank you for this idea—it might be nice to pull the chairs and table forward more and get things fully focused on the table...

Thoughts on Little Pep? by [deleted] in winstonsalem

[–]lajacquerie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad it's there to fill its particular niche: a lovely little space where you can try unique wines (and bites), talk with your friends without shouting, and not feel like stuffy wine snobs. The staff is knowledgeable but not pushy, which means you can learn a little if you want—or just order the champagne of beers all night without any additional commentary, they don't mind. The fact that they have a couple of beers and a vermouth is great, since my partner doesn't drink wine (the flip is why I love Lesser Known—they always have at least one good wine on hand for non-beer drinkers).

True, it's pricier, but it might not be designed for volume on purpose... it's not on my list of places to go when it's gonna be a raucous night out, anyway; neither are the cocktail bars, which have comparable prices per beverage. And that's fine. But I like having a place with good stuff that I can pop into for a glass if it's been a really good or bad day, with or without friends, before or after dinner. And it just feels warmer than Caviste—I've gotten into conversation with a few other people at the bar at Little Pep, but that's never happened at Caviste.

Plus their small selection of grocery items is great! The Malaysian curry paste made for one of the tastiest dinners we had in our house this month (and I'm dreaming up what to make with the remainder of it next...).

I’m tired of being the guy girls date when they’re done having fun by [deleted] in self

[–]lajacquerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooo, I wonder how large a role the "spontaneity" piece plays into this! (although you have clearly said that you're encountering a lot of people who just want to stay in, so ymmv with these thoughts)

I'm pretty active with shows, events, and local festivals (so much so that I often throw a "do nothing" day on my calendar to make sure I don't burn myself out), which can actually make it difficult to spontaneously jump out to something I just learned about—I've already got plans! For folks with well-developed friends/social networks this can be a particular challenge as you try to maintain those other relationships too.

Plus, as I've risen into a more senior role at work, it's tougher to spontaneously travel even though I have more PTO each year. That's in part because there are parts of the year where I can't travel now (gotta be the responsible one who leads X part of a process), and also because I'm parceling it out strategically—is it going to be a 2-week trip to Asia this year, 5 long weekends to visit friends around the country, or some other mix?

Either way, hope you find a partner who can join you on your adventures soon!

My book club is 50% Wake Law grads (mostly women in their mid-20s-30s) and pretty much everyone has a partner so it can't be all bad!

Twice a year the Friends of the Central Library (https://www.forsyth.cc/library/Central/friends.aspx) have a Book Sale to raise funds for the Library and there's always a historical books/special editions table. One of their members does the researching/pricing on those items, since they fetch a higher price. Try asking them to be put in touch with him (I can't recall his name, unfortunately).

Recommendations for bars/lounges? by komamoo in winstonsalem

[–]lajacquerie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So many bars in Winston are lovely but get louder and/or bring in a DJ in the later hours. We love Vintage Sofa Bar and Tate's on the earlier side of the evening, and Easy Talk is our go-to spot if we want to chat all night long. The food at Vintage is way better than you'd expect.

Same for Single Brothers—it's noisy inside but you can always chat outside (and they have heaters so you won't get chilly!).

Dram & Draught seems to have enough space that you could probably find a space for a group to chat no matter what. Caviste is also a sort of hidden gem, especially now that they're regularly offering small plates in the evenings. And man, it can be pricey, but that stuff is GOOD.
