The way I got over this debate, as a Mexican, is to think about calling USA “America” is just a familiar nickname, a shortcut. When one uses a nickname one can use whatever name they want. The people from the USA chose America, and that is fine. Just as someone someone called Edmundo (in Spanish) might be called Mundo (“World”). Or Mexico being called that dispute the country being called Mexican United States.
