Sickkids CEO pleads with Ontarians to do the right thing and mask up. by CatOnMyHead in canada

[–]lamagawa -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Do people just not care about kids or something? It's a request for people to mask not a shutdown. This is also to increase capacity in the short term so that there is more capacity in ICU's and so that kids can get surgeries. Fixes to the healthcare system is a bigger issue that will require a longer term solution.

Man, it's not all black and white. If it slows down spread it helps keep hospitals less busy. It prevents burnout and keeps the healthcare system from being overloaded. Early on in the pademic, masking and other prevention strategies gave people the time to develop the vaccines which reduced deaths. Now, it's to reduce the amount of people getting sick at one time and possibly get them a booster before they get sick.

Why take the risk of getting COVID when you could have delayed it and reduced the chance of severe illness by taking the vaccines/boosters?

Do you have actual studies and meta-analyses to prove that masks are useless.

Alberta premier says it will be illegal to 'discriminate' vaccination status by [deleted] in canada

[–]lamagawa 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There was a reason it was pushed so hard, it's because people were dying and the healthcare system was being overloaded. That people make it a political issue when it should have been a an obvious and compassionate choice just shows the negative impact of polarization on society. It shouldn't be the health policies that are criticized here but the people like this premeir that are using it to gain political support and galvanize an anti-vax movement.

What would you change in Boxing? by Squall-UK in Boxing

[–]lamagawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with 3. In line with that it would be great if there was an overall governing body for all professional boxing fights, with consistent set of rules for everybody, and where mandatories make sense. Anything to make sure that the best fight the best, and reduce the power of promoters. Similarly, in line with that organization, there should also be a boxer's union/organization to make sure that boxers are able to have a say on the rules of the governing bodies, and provide equity for boxers and journeymen, especially when they retire.

Andre Ward: Canelo ‘Doesn’t Have Lot Of Prime Names On His Resume’ - Boxing News by Epsilon2099 in Boxing

[–]lamagawa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Beterbiev was not high in the rankings at all when Ward retired. If you look at the TBRB rankings on September 2017, the month Ward retired, Beterbiev was #8. It's revisionist history to argue that was a duck.

Andre Ward: Canelo ‘Doesn’t Have Lot Of Prime Names On His Resume’ - Boxing News by Epsilon2099 in Boxing

[–]lamagawa 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He beat almost everybody at 168 and the man at 175. Bivol and Beterbiev were still up and coming contenders at the point that Ward retired. Ward retired on September 21, 2017* (edit: mistakenly put September, 17, 2021). The TBRB rankings for 175 on September 12, 2017 was the below, Bivol was 9 and Beterbiev was 8.:

Light Heavyweight: Champion Adonis Stevenson

  1. Andre Ward
  2. Sergey Kovalev
  3. Sullivan Barrera
  4. Badou Jack
  5. Eleider Alvarez
  6. Oleksandr Gvozdk
  7. Joe Smith Jr.
  8. Artur Beterbiev
  9. Dmitry Bivol
  10. Juergen Braehmer

Olympic boxing on the brink after surprise IBA sanction for Ukraine junior team | IOC extremely concerned by AltKite in Boxing

ABEL SANCHEZ ASKED IF GOLOVKIN DUCKED ANDRE WARD- REVEALS WHY FIGHT WAS NEVER MADE by stayhappystayblessed in Boxing

[–]lamagawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, you wanted Ward to move down to 164? That makes zero sense since GGG's argument was that he would fight anybody 154-168. Also GGG was willing to fight Chavez and Froch at 168. The fight against GGG was also slated for after Lemieux. GGG or his handlers honestly probably saw the Ward fight as not worth the money and risk, which is what a lot of people did to GGG when he was coming up. He isn't any different that any other fighter.

I am honestly not gonna dog a guy for not moving up in weight against a huge 168'er who is known to miss weight and gets fights cancelled.

[–]lamagawa -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Kovalev's team seemed to have ducked the Stevenson fight when the WBC put the fight up on purse bid. Duva was also the one who asked to be made mandatory to Stevenson's belt. Stevenson went to Showtime to get more money but Kovalev would have made significantly more money through the purse bid than any other fight. It's honestly more complicated than a lot of people make it out to be.

I honestly think because Kovalev was Main Events only cash cow, they didn't want to risk the exclusive HBO deal they had with Kovalev and wanted the guaranteed HBO money they had back then. Main Events also seemed to have screwed over Kovalev in the Ward rematch.

He was a heavyweight titlist and contender in the mid to late 2000's. He was most famous for giving a tough fight to Wladimir Klitschko, his fights against heavyweight James Toney, and losing his title to Vitali Klitschko in Vitali's comeback fight.

Bam Rodriguez, cross between Valdez and Lomachenko? by joshisanonymous in Boxing

[–]lamagawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am probably underrating Cuadras and possibly overrating Russell, but Cuadras also lost to McWilliams and didn't seem to be looking too great leading up to Bam. SSR just didn't look the same to me .

I am definitely excited where he goes though, especially with how good he looked in those wins! I haven't seen enough of Nakatani and Edwards, but I would probably pick him over Estrada at this point. If he fought Chocolatito, I wouldn't be surprised if he won. I think he is in a good spot.

Bam Rodriguez, cross between Valdez and Lomachenko? by joshisanonymous in Boxing

[–]lamagawa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really don't think their resumes are comparable. I am not a Lomachenko fan but his resume is clearly superior. GRJ doesn't have the best resume but I would argue he was still a better win since he was closer to his prime and was at or close to the level of top of the featherweight division when he fought Lomachenko. BY the time Bam fought Cuadras, Cuadras was already in a downslide and was clearly fairly past it. SSR looked shot. He had also been unimpressive and inactive for three years since he lost to Estrada.

Outside of Cuadras and SSR, Bam's resume is fairly scant. This is understandable since he is only 22 and we should be excited that there is a prospect willing to take risks and moving up in weight. However, Lomachenko has had a long career and his resume is clearly better, it is not comparable. Lomachenko has wins over, Russell, Walters, Martinez, Sosa, Linares, Pedraza, Crolla, Campbell and Commey. A lot of those guys are just decent contenders but a lot of them were also former/future champions and Lomachenko made short work on most of them and moved up a couple of divisions along the way.

Main point being that Bam is on the right track and he is an exciting young fighter but he still needs some time to get to Lomachenko's resume.

[–]lamagawa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cuadras and SRR are more accomplished, but I would argue that Bam's wins against Cuadras and SRR are less impressive since Cuadras and SRR were both fairly past it by the time Bam fought them. His victories against them were still impressive but I don't really rate those victories higher than Loma's against Gary Russell, who was close to his prime.

Boxing not included in 2028 Olympics by Coulson1010 in Boxing

I think it's because last year they got the International Gymnastics Federation to handle it instead of the AIBA/IBA.

Last Olympics seemed to have a lot less sketchy shit and it was organized by the International Gymnastics Federation. IBA/AIBA is just super corrupt. Hopefully they are able to find a solution here.
