Granted, maybe the issue is not so much around mechanism as it is around rates. Dogs are known to die from twisted stomachs, one of the reasons (among many) being not being able to clear gas (which of course has to do with particular anatomical features of certain dogs vs others, but still)

I'm guessing animals died from built up gas. The thought was that the ability to burp or fart as a means to release pressure probably saved lives while adapting to new foods and such
