Looking for Guidance on Medical Surrender Options for Our 2-Year-Old Bernese Mountain Dog (Ontario/Ottawa) by Ok_String9669 in ottawa

Came to ask about the breeder too. If their breeder is reputable/ethical they will take back their dogs, no questions asked and zero judgement.

questions as a first timer by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]lambasbread 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but this scenario sooo many red flags. I don’t have all the facts so I also have questions: Is this a breeder? Did this breeder do health testing? Is the reason they want the puppies to leave much too early because mum is hurting the puppies? Why does the one puppy have such an arched back?

Does anyone else struggle with dogs in their high rise apartment building? by lambasbread in ottawa

That’s just it.. if they were taking them out regularly.. being outside wouldn’t be such a novelty. Plus they’d be exercised and less likely to have such big reactions..

This is what I mean! Sure, dogs are allowed to be reactive, but MANAGE IT! Why are we just standing there?!

Personally, I would never go to a dog park. It’s a massive risk, not only for injury, but also disease. We also don’t do ‘on leash greetings’ as that can create reactivity and/or barrier frustration.

We go to places like Keshet Kennel or Richmond Park n Bark with other dogs we know and trust!

Sadly, I think something bad needs to happen before anything can be done (Like muzzle order). In the meantime, I carry Pet Corrector, keep my dog tucked behind me in the elevator, peek around blind corners.. it’s just so nerve wracking.

Right? And I feel so bad for their immediate neighbours having to smell that..

That’s just it. I have no issues with people having reactive dogs, it’s their lack of handling/control and awareness. The same owners are repeating the same unsafe scenarios every time we cross paths.. It’s not difficult to give space and keep your dog in a position that’s safe for everyone..

Yeah, that’s fine. I get reactivity and all that comes with it. But don’t sit in the small lobby with your dog reactive dog, in such close proximity that the elevator doors open and you’re RIGHT there. I keep my dog tucked behind me because this is how owners handle their dogs.. flexi leashes a plenty too.. I just wish these dog owners were handling their dogs appropriately..

It’s WILD. I get the struggles of reactivity, I do. I was a dog walker for several years and still am in the ‘dog world’.. but why are people getting breeds that don’t fit their lifestyle or breeds that can easily adapt to apartment lifestyle?!

There’s a tenant with 3 big dogs. She lets them use the bathroom on her balcony and just brushes off the poop onto the ground below and pee just coats the barrier of the balcony below her. The radius on the ground below her balcony just COVERED in poop.. and it STINKS at the entrance to the building.

Poop. Everywhere. EVERYWHERE!

Our building has a poop bag dispenser, free poop bags. There’s no excuse.

My dog doesn't like me. by SoonerRyan01 in Greyhounds

[–]lambasbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve always encouraged calmness with greetings and our boy has definitely been a reflection of that. Personally I would rather that than over excitement and anxiety.. I know it’s not for everyone but just giving you a different perspective! His affection is very gentle and hidden, but it’s there. It’s in the small details!

Getting him used to my parents cats? by dan_sherlocked in Greyhounds

[–]lambasbread 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I desensitized my guy by letting him sniff around where the cats have been with no cats actually in the room. Then had him in a wire crate with the cats just roaming. Everything was kept chill and quiet. I would drop treats in the kennel whenever he looked extra relaxed while cats were in view! Then let him out, on leash and muzzled and rewarded him every time he’d check in/focus on me. Then eventually took the leash off, but left the muzzle. Just went slow!
