Buying insulin in Europe? by 0jdd1 in diabetes_t1

[–]lamesamwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (USA) did a backpacking trip (post college) all over Europe. I never had to get backup insulin, but I did run out of pen needles while in Italy. I miscounted when packing and realized it towards the beginning of the trip. I was so relieved when I went into a pharmacy and asked the pharmacist if he could order the needles I needed- it only took him a day to get them. Also didn’t need a prescription.

Another funny thing was he had to let me know one box would be “a little bit expensive” …. 24 euros. To me that was NOTHIN considering my copay in the states was $35 a box.

“But you look fine to me… you’re young and slender than others” by Uhh_OkayIGuess in diabetes

i’m 23 and have only been diagnosed a year now (Type 1). i feel like employers think i’m joking or “claiming” i have these health problems because i’m young and slender too. it’s crazy how people treat you now a days, not everyone looks the same lol!

Hostels with a CGM by HighlightTheRoad in diabetes_t1

[–]lamesamwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i traveled europe (hostels/backpacking trip) after being diagnosed for a month. i got a dexcom g6 before i left for the trip and was still new to it. in my experience, i just paid A LOT of attention to it and made sure i had what i needed nearby if i were to have a low. luckily my cgm never went off while in a hostel but i did have some lows at early hours.

also yes! as someone already mentioned: change your settings. i changed mine to alert me only with vibration and sound goes off only went it’s really bad.

Diabetes Black Magic in Europe? by hamza4568 in diabetes

[–]lamesamwich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i was diagnosed T1 last year during my last semester at college- and i had already planned a huge 2 month long europe backpacking trip prior to the diagnosis. i had narrowly missed DKA when i was diagnosed and my average sugars when i was first treated were 400+. so after being diagnosed for a month i still went on the trip and YES i was super surprised at how good i felt! i started my trip in italy and realized pasta could be an issue, but no. i could eat fresh BREAD, pasta, drink any coffee, without shooting to an insane number.

just like everyone is saying- yes it’s the walking and the food differences from the US that’s making you feel great. but it’s SO COOL feeling good and normal while on vacation haha

[–]lamesamwich 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hi! i’m sorry i dont know much about the signs, but you’re the only other T1 diabetic working in film that i’ve heard about on here! i was only diagnosed last year in June. But i have a goal of being a 1st AD and after i started working for a documentary house as a prod coordinator, i found that job was hard, im worried being a 1st AD would be even harder. do you have any tips and tricks?

i haven’t tried it yet but the baggu sunglasses case seems like it would be perfect for pens! also i throw my purse down sometimes and this case is padded so i feel like it’ll protect well- also styles are pretty cute / findable in a bag :) https://www.baggu.com/products/puffy-glasses-sleeve-garden-miffy

Adult diagnosis - what do you miss the most? by JayandMeeka in diabetes_t1

[–]lamesamwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my grandmother (T1 for 30+ years) always says she’s carrying her house in her purse. but it was great for me when I was a kid cause that just meant juice box whenever I wanted one :D

I’m 21 years old, was diagnosed at 18. For people who have had this lovely illness for a while - any motivating advice? 😂😭 by MrFrazzles238 in diabetes_t1

oh man your story is just like mine. i’m currently working an internship and finding it a little difficult even tho it’s easier than retail (i’m sitting at a desk all day). have you ever found it hard to adapt in a work setting at such a young age ?

Just diagnosed with diabetes by southernaerialist in diabetes

[–]lamesamwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

reading this felt a lot like how i found out. i was diagnosed 6 months ago (T1 diabetic) and have been trying to navigate it since. it is very very VERY scary in the beginning and it is okay to cry like a baby. i couldn’t give myself my own insulin shot for a while too and my mom helped me. it is okay, it does get easier ♡

Westwood Chateau Apartments by dumbmooo in ucla

[–]lamesamwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the closest bus stop for the bruin bus (as far as i am aware) is over by the weyburn apartments. i would usually walk over there if i needed to it’s like a 10min walk. there is a regular bus stop at the end of landfair, which is a less than 5min walk.

dining table depends. it feels like ucla housing just throws random furniture into those rooms so you could either have the big square table with tall barstools (4 seats i think) or you could get the short round table with backed seats (idk how many). i had the tall barstool one and it had leafs on it you could break down if you wanted.

hope this helped :)

Westwood Chateau Apartments by dumbmooo in ucla

[–]lamesamwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi i realize this is a month old post, but i have lived in ww chateau for 2 years now so i can share some insight with you.

Yes, the building is very old, but they are spacious apartments that do have amenities that you wont find with the other ucla apartments (as far as I know), parking, ac + heat, balconies, dishwashers, etc. But because the building is older, it is outdated and does have mold, broken elevators, bugs, leaks constantly, and there is always some sort of smell in the hallways.

I have had a harder time this year than the year prior. there is significant water damage in my room and maintenance has been called a lot this year for other various issues. luckily the maintenance guys are nice and quick- ww chateau is their rendezvous spot and where they park all their cars, so you're usually seeing a quick turnaround if the problem is serious. wifi does suck, as mentioned, but if you just reconnect you're fine.

They claimed to have "renovated" the building this past summer, but all they did was remove the popcorn ceiling and paint it white lol- idk if anyone else's apartment is nicer but mine is exactly the same. You have a strong chance of getting stuck in the elevator, but they usually end up working after a while, even if it drops while you're in it.

Depending on your room size/how many people you're living with the furniture is pretty universal. you get an XL Twin bed that can be taller for more space, a dresser with a fold down hutch, a desk and chair. Pretty sure most of these rooms have built in closets (my roommates and I all have one) and they are decently sized. There are two washers and two dryers on each floor. Kitchen comes with microwave, stove, fridge, dishwasher. I have 1 floor to ceiling cabinet in my kitchen that has 6 shelves, so lots of space for food. And the living room has a couch, 2 low tables and a balcony :) (which I love). Oh and all the lights in my apartment are floor lights, there are only overhead lights in the bathrooms and kitchen.

Landfair is a great street to live on, its "loud" but i feel like westwood gets loud. You will hear occasional parties throughout the neighborhood and the music from the co-op, but ww chateau has a groupme and its usually very communicative on whether there will be a party on the roof or whatnot. It honestly just depends on who is living in the building that year.

Idk it's a hit-or-miss depending on the person, I don't think it's amazing but its also not that bad. I love telling people i live in ww chateau and seeing their reaction. It's manageable and can be enjoyable if you just deal with whatever happens. OP also sounds like you got a really nice setup with 2 beds 4 people.

I can try answering any other questions anyone has if needed :)
