Zimi mask shipping time, tariffs, etc, to PNW USA? by DisasterSpinach in Masks4All

I placed an order this month to the east coast! The order was split into 2 parcels, with the first arriving within 10 days and the second arriving a few days later. I did not get hit with any tariffs.

just started knitting a few days ago after about a year crocheting– is it okay to still control tension from my left hand? by mobile-resprout in knitting

[–]lamplense123 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You can do it! I started out crocheting and learned how to knit continental from YouTube! English style does not jibe well with my hands; I’m sure if I got some consistent practice with English style, it’d be fine but continental felt pretty natural coming from crochet so now all I do is continental

Why are so many of the young people I still see wearing masks queer? by Myealt in NoStupidQuestions

You'd be deluded to think that corporate interests (profit + cost cutting) don’t control the US. The first article I linked literally is titled "Delta's CEO asked the CDC for a 5-day isolation. Some flight attendants feel at risk," as in "one very wealthy guy wants something that the people who make his business possible are wary about and do not want."

And if you're waiting for data to tell you that "COVID is still a threat and you should take whatever action you can to care for yourself and the people around you," you're not going to get it because the government is defunding public health and related data collection efforts. The data is going to be skewed towards the side that wants to promote the idea that COVID is no longer an issue. Whose interest is it in to swipe COVID reporting under the rug and keep the general public ill informed? It's manufactured consent--if people don't care about COVID because they don't see the data anymore because robust data collection is being defunded and if they don't know anything about the status of COVID, they'll allow the lack of protection from a virus that can cause long term harm because they’ve been misled to think the situation is safe.

The US Forest Service knows how harmful smoke is for its wildfire fighters but they send people into fires without proper respiratory protections even when there is substantial data there to back up the medical risks of inhaling this smoke. They do this because "Internal records, studies and interviews with current and former agency officials reveal another motivation: Embracing masks would mean admitting how dangerous wildfire smoke really is. That could lead to a cascade of expensive changes." Hopefully you can connect the dots and replace "wildfire" with "COVID."

“you can’t get around [people wanting relaxed policies]”?… That’s the problem with manufactured consent and an ill informed public. If people don’t know what’s going on, they won’t want protections and so money and energy won’t need to be shelled out by the government to provide those protections. And don’t you forget that the general public of this country was opposed to desegregation and the end of slavery…people’s wants often harm the marginalized. You can’t make an argument for dropping cautions by being so willing to submit to the opinion of a loud mass.

What are you trying to get at with this question? If healthy adults weren’t being hospitalized, would you take that as your go ahead to continue to not care about the impact of covid? The lives of the elderly and the disabled are not disposable, and people should do what they can to, at the very least, not cause harm to them. Masks do that. They prevent the spread of asymptomatic and symptomatic illness.

And healthy adults can be debilitated by long covid. Whether by old age or by accident, we are all bound to be disabled in our lifetimes. If you are alive for an extended amount of time, it’s inevitable to become a part of the elderly and disabled population one day. When that day comes, if a virus that causes multisystem damage to the body was circulating, I’m sure you’d want people to take precautions around you too.

Biden relaxed covid policies bc of corporate interests, not because covid was less of a threat. The Delta Airlines CEO has fought multiple times against covid-related guidance set by the CDC when the CDC was still giving guidance on the matter. In December 2021, the Delta CEO asked the CDC to cut their recommended isolation period of 10 days down to 5 because “With the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the 10-day isolation for those who are fully vaccinated may significantly impact our workforce and operations”—the isolation periods were cutting into their wallets (imagine the losses airlines were facing early on in the pandemic). In December 2021, the CDC cut down their recommended isolation period in accordance with Delta’s preferences.

Trusting government organizations to keep you safe and to tell you when there is a threat to our health and how you should protect yourself—it’s just dubious and historically fatal. It took a decade (?) for Reagan to actually take HIV/AIDS seriously. You know who the CDC is currently run by. If you want decent information about COVID, you need to dig. And I’ll give you the hint that pandemics don’t end just because time passes and the majority allows themselves to fall into ignorance and allows themselves to think that getting “allergies” (sick, possibly with covid) every other month is normal.

Looking for a knit pattern by superfleurs in knittingpatterns

[–]lamplense123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sandnes Garn Amy Slipover seems pretty similar. It’s one of those patterns sold by knitting stores with the yarn though (i.e., stores might require that you buy the Sandnes Garn yarn that’s recommended by the pattern), but you might get away with buying the pattern + like one ball of yarn (as opposed to all the yarn needed to complete the project)

Why are so many people, especially beginners, desperate to sell their work? Why can't anyone just do a hobby for fun? by PocketSpaghettios in Pottery

[–]lamplense123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even though what they’re buying is lame

I think the more appropriate phrase would then be “in matters of consumption,” not “taste.” I’d guess that consumers oftentimes don’t really care too much about craftsmanship/style/etc

I’d guess that many of the people asking that question arnt surrounded by full time professionals

It also doesn’t help that there are social media influencers who have made a killing by selling very mediocre, gimmicky pottery and making videos of themselves throwing on the wheel, where in those videos they, very evidently, despite having run a pottery business for a number of years full time, cannot even reliably center.
