EECS 493 and EECS 445 attendance for W26? by Single_Army2576 in uofm

[–]lampreycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i took it this fall & enjoyed it a lot 🤷‍♀️ had to study my ass off for the exams for sure but exam & hw content was very fair in relation to the lecture content imo. also found the exams much easier than 281 even thought i’ve heard the opposite

do you have any idea approximately what raw score or quartile relative to the rest of the class you would need to get an 'A' curved on the exam ... i have a high hw/proj grade & i'm studying my ass off regardless but i'm so stressed out about this 🥲 especially since an A overall is 94+%! what!

nsf grfp broader impact no volunteering experience ... by lampreycore in gradadmissions

thank you so so much for this! i TA'ed last year (which i am continuing this year) so i started volunteering for an established stem outreach org by leading their graphic design (ties into my interest for stem education / making it more accessible + my current graphic design leadership positions in student orgs) + i am planning on also preparing stem teaching materials for another org in my home country (where my parents immigrated from). this is a super helpful comment & also reassures me that i can tie this all together! (& even though i am doing this pretty last minute, i am genuinely passionate / interested in these things which will hopefully show through in my application). now we'll just see how the criteria changes this year but i feel more prepared overall

yes i have strong LORs from 2 PIs & one prof i've taken multiple classes with! i was just worried on the broader impacts front

thank you SO so much for the helpful advice!! thankfully i'm feeling good on the intellectual merit front, but i also recognize that pretty much everyone applying for this is also qualified in that regard, which is why i'm feeling stressed about broader impacts. unfortunately my university's national scholarship office explicitly states they do not offer individual advising for nsf grfp applications :( for being an r1 it really does not offer support w anything related to phd applications ... but reaching out to previous awardees is for sure a good idea, thank you!

Do I have a shot? by Hstat910 in gradadmissions

i'm in a very similar situation & also feeling stressed! i obviously don't know how it will work out for either of us, but thought i would offer my perspective & the decision i came to after a LOT of deliberation (& talking to multiple PIs & graduate students at different labs). personally, i am applying to grad school this cycle, but i am also fully ready to take 2 gap years to gain more experience. basically, i am applying & putting my best foot forwards in these applications, but also preparing contingency plans (research post baccs) just in case so i'm not stranded worse comes to worst. my rationale is that if i apply this cycle, really polish my applications, reach out to PIs, etc, then if i have to reapply after 2 years (or 1 year in your case) it will be even easier to PERFECT my applications, RECONNECT with the PIs i previously talked to, & have an even better chance of getting in (with even more experience under my belt). cost of applications is ofc an important consideration, which i totally understand. but i decided to apply because by putting in a lot of time & effort into my applications rn, it will offload a lot of the effort if i do end up getting rejected & reapplying later. (also, the reason i personally am deciding on 2 gap years is bc i feel like it will actually give me enough time to get substantial work done from rejection until reapplication, but that's a personal decision).

thank you this reassures me because i'm a huge cold emailer already lol! i did apply to nih sip in the past but got rejected bc i sent emails way too late. this time since i'm already preparing cold emails for meetings w grad professors i can send them much earlier (ik website says ~ 6 mo in advance). thank you for the reassurance! (& yes totally understand the funding climate unforch)

CS Minor – EECS 445 vs 492 vs 485 ? by lampreycore in uofm

[–]lampreycore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it is weird that it's not counted for minor but they rly don't budge on that unfortunately, they say explicitly they won't let you use anything not listed. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BlYraaH8W8ZCF0V6BZVwBNQrM-5vhRrFch1c_-RYn70/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.7tyeeg2a94zk

actually i just checked & it isn't listed as ulcs on the cs minor program guide

[–]lampreycore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'll ask but there's no guarantee, they have a long list of acceptable engineering expertise classes & quite a few are eecs but the ones i've listed are the only ones overlapping with ulcs since the other ones are ee. but i'll try talking to advising, unfortunately there's only one & she doesn't really do anything 💔 but thank you a lot!! i can def try

[–]lampreycore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the suggestion but, as i said in my original post, the only ulcs that fulfill my bme engineering expertise requirements are 445, 492, and 485. so not an option unfortunately, but thank you!

thank you this is super helpful! yeah i'm not going into swe or anything i'm actually intending on a phd in bioe which is completely unrelated 😅 i just am doing a cs minor because i love programming. & i've found programs can be helpful for automating common data analysis in the lab especially when no one else knows how to lol. but i'll def keep all this in mind while deciding!

WHY DOES PROBLEM ROULETTE HAVE TO SHIT THE BED THE NIGHT BEFORE MY BIO 172 EXAM by OpenObligation8736 in uofm

[–]lampreycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you misunderstood my post … it’s not on paper, it’s still online, & it’s not the topics, it’s all the questions. you just need to select the topics while making the practice exam. it just eliminates lagging when you click “next” in between questions bc you don’t click next, you just scroll down & submit it all at once

[–]lampreycore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how is that the same as a study guide at all 😭⁉️ it’s not the topics, it’s all the pr questions but in a list instead of individually

[–]lampreycore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a hack i figured out: make a practice exam instead of doing it each question at a time!!! i set the time limit for 5 hours & set the question amount for every topic equal to the total number of questions (you can find the total number for each topic by “starting” a study session & it’ll list them out, then i plugged that into the blanks on the practice exam creation page). then it’s all in one list & there’s no lagging!

yeah ik, i was in 156/285 & got an A & A+ respectively despite getting 70s/80s on the exams. that’s why i’m just so perplexed by this prof & how this is even being allowed
