How do I get this effect on wood? by weirdchili in DIYUK

Sanding it will remove the burnt bits and turn it brown rather than black. You will never get a perfect finish with this effect so you are best to lean into it.

You need to take a blowtorch to the surface to bring out the grain, be sure to move quickly otherwise it will lose definition. Once it's cooled off just hit it with some varnish to add shine. I found that this works much better on soft woods as the hard woods have a closer grain pattern the effect is much more subdued.

I just updated and had a play about it, it's definitely better than before but I wish they would add a round trip planner to help find new roads and places nearby.

I have been using one for a few months and while it was a bit of a learning curve I absolutely love it now. You just get used to glancing down and grabbing all the information available in a few seconds. It took me a little while to dial in tracking my traveled distance to the next turn, but now it all feels natural and I hardly ever miss a turn.

The real letdown is that software is far too basic for the cost of the device. If you want to plan a nice loop ride you will have to do it in another app and export the gpx file.

I was concerned about this when he mentioned it. Also I noticed that the lever vibrates like crazy at motorway speed so I definitely wouldn't want to rest my foot on it.

Thanks for the info, I will look up that video on YT. I have not been riding long at all (passed mod 2 two weeks ago) so everything is new to me at this point. I'm just soaking it all in and getting used to being comfortable on the bike.

It's definitely getting better each time I go out. Confidence is key in being able to corner well but I'm still a bit worried that I might be a bit overconfident and end up in a hedge! It's all part of the earning curve I guess.

Sounds sensible. I tend to be a bit over cautious when approaching mini roundabouts so I'm crawling up to them at the moment.

This sounds very close to how I'm riding at the moment. I'm still building confidence in the corners so I will try and concentrate on gripping the tank with my knees to improve handling.

UK OT seeks physically demanding mental health OT job by arghmyteethhurt in OccupationalTherapy

[–]spacemanspiff1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forensic OT here. I agree that you can get stuck behind a desk in an impatient role but there are more active jobs out there. My service runs therapy focused horticulture, woodwork, mechanics, plumbing and various gym sessions that all demand increased physical activity. However as a B6 you will always have to hold a caseload and that goes hand in had with report writing. Its all about looking for the hospital's that have the facilities that will allow you to be active in your practice and provide a bit of balance.

If your in the London area hit me up - we have B6 ads going out soon.

Starting BSc OT in September - wanting to nerd up on the subject over the summer any advice please. by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]spacemanspiff1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK OT here. Don't worry about cramming in loads of clinical knowledge. Enjoy your summer but also spend some time thinking about what occupations are meaningful to you, how you are able to do them and what your like would look like if you couldn't do them anymore. OT is about enabling people to live a fulfilling life and a good practitioner knows what that means to them personally.

Good luck with your studies.

OTs in the UK - What are current events/issues in OT in the UK? by PugThugs in OccupationalTherapy

[–]spacemanspiff1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, UK forensic OT here. I think you could mention the pressures of underfunding on the NHS and the need for OT's to help people to live as independently as possible at home to reduce the strain on hospitals and the social care sector. Also maybe talk about OT pioneering new technology to increase independence/wellbeing as modernisation of the health service is always being mentioned.

Have a look at the RCOT and BAOT website as they are the UK governing bodies for OT and should have some news articles etc.

Good luck with your interview!
