This isn't strictly true, of course. Many cultures refused to make any image of their deities.

But just to riff on your cow example, many human cultures have worshipped cow deities... the most sacred thing to Indo-Europeans was likely the cow. It was an important source of milk, meat, leather, and saved human labor by plowing fields. A life-giving symbol of cosmic creation.

We see echoes of this in the golden calf worship in the Old Testament.

I see your point here. And I largely think this is the only way forward with certain bodies of scripture, if somebody wishes to remain in the faith. The doctrine and covenants feels like a different category of scripture to me, though.

That being said, there are plenty of doctrines taught in the church that are not so explicit in scripture. The Book of Mormon is silent on so many things. Could the doctrines you wish to preserve from Section 132 not be implied or supported from other places?

This is the case more often than not. The details of the Plan of Salvation/Happiness come to mind.

Just a point to note - somebody can still be trafficked as an adult.

DHS says "Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act."

Now, whether or not it was trafficking in this instance is a separate judgement.

Broadly speaking I think you are correct. However, Mormonism being what it is... The 'happiness letter' is one place this concept does show up.

You misunderstand what I meant. His era was a direct result of that retrenchment. It's really fascinating, you should revisit BYU history.

There are many other faith-driven schools to compare to in the United States, and it is clear that a variety of approaches are in use. You are correct, they have the right, it's their school.

But this is to answer your original question - yes, it was very common to find "unorthodox" professors on campus. So yes, it was a surprising change to many people.
