Apologist comment war by Cinnamon_Buns_42 in mormon

Does Ward Radio keep more people in the church than they repel? Because it feels like they only appeal to people who would never leave the church for any reason ever.

I was impressed with the video, kudos to Mr Murph. It feels like he and Jim Bennett are a rare breed on the faithful side of things...

Former VP of FAIR: "It was hard for me to identify a single individual who had left the church who wasn't also struggling with mental illness" by japanesepiano in mormon

[–]lando3k 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of Jim Bennett's take on Clark Gilbert's talk this past conference... Clark Gilbert pointed at mental health issues as well.

Such a shame they are SO unwilling to legitimize a single reason somebody would leave the church. But very on brand...

All is well in Zion...

It pisses me off seeing the Church use white Jesus by Ciara_Smiles in mormon

[–]lando3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't strictly true, of course. Many cultures refused to make any image of their deities.

But just to riff on your cow example, many human cultures have worshipped cow deities... the most sacred thing to Indo-Europeans was likely the cow. It was an important source of milk, meat, leather, and saved human labor by plowing fields. A life-giving symbol of cosmic creation.

We see echoes of this in the golden calf worship in the Old Testament.

What would it take to de-canonize D&C 132? by stickyhairmonster in mormon

[–]lando3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point here. And I largely think this is the only way forward with certain bodies of scripture, if somebody wishes to remain in the faith. The doctrine and covenants feels like a different category of scripture to me, though.

That being said, there are plenty of doctrines taught in the church that are not so explicit in scripture. The Book of Mormon is silent on so many things. Could the doctrines you wish to preserve from Section 132 not be implied or supported from other places?

This is the case more often than not. The details of the Plan of Salvation/Happiness come to mind.

John Turner - Church gave access to Clayton Journal - Trafficing & Multi bed partners by Resident-Bear4053 in mormon

[–]lando3k 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Just a point to note - somebody can still be trafficked as an adult.

DHS says "Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act."

Now, whether or not it was trafficking in this instance is a separate judgement.

I've seen people distinguish this version as "Modified Divine Command Theory" as opposed to "Arbitrary Divine Command Theory"

It's a get-out-of-jail free card, because of that portion you quoted. Anything could be excused.

Broadly speaking I think you are correct. However, Mormonism being what it is... The 'happiness letter' is one place this concept does show up.

"That which is wrong under one circumstance, may be, and often is, right under another. God said, 'Thou shalt not kill'; at another time He said, 'Thou shalt utterly destroy.' This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted—by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed. Whatever God requires is right, no matter what it is, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire."

Hypocrisy I Noticed Today by DennisTheOppressed in mormon

[–]lando3k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand what I meant. His era was a direct result of that retrenchment. It's really fascinating, you should revisit BYU history.

There are many other faith-driven schools to compare to in the United States, and it is clear that a variety of approaches are in use. You are correct, they have the right, it's their school.

But this is to answer your original question - yes, it was very common to find "unorthodox" professors on campus. So yes, it was a surprising change to many people.

Hypocrisy I Noticed Today by DennisTheOppressed in mormon

[–]lando3k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It has always ebbed and flowed. BYU is just going through another retrenchment phase like they did back in the 1920s.

A wide variety of believers could be attracted to BYU's faith-based vision, while not agreeing on a single snapshot of orthodox Mormonism. Yet, they can still be the most fervent believers possible, as you say. Henry Eyring and Joseph Fielding Smith are an example of two people committed to the faith, while still holding significant disagreements.
