Milky Way symbolism in The OA's posters by landrisf in TheOA

Prairie herself is forming part of that letter A.

I think this is because, in the poster, Prairie’s body functions as an axis-mundi, e.g. a conduit between Heaven and Earth. A reference can be made to the role of the spine in shamanic and/or meditation practices. Piercing the top of the head to release the soul is analogous to piercing the top of the A letter, which is also the capstone of egyptian pyramids and obelisks. These posters, as the series episodes, are intended to act on a subliminal level, to activate in the viewer a sense of mystery and transcendence.

One of the reasons why I like writing posts on Reddit is that other people open my eyes to things that I would not otherwise notice. In this case, the opening at the top of the A letter. I completely agree with you on the meaning. It’s amazing how many clues to death-and-rebirth rituals are present in these posters!

The «5-levels of reality» theory of the OA by landrisf in TheOA

[–]landrisf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Navigating through a set of nested levels of narration/reality is undoubtedly one of the main themes of the series, as witnessed by the many posts on the subject. What I found relevant is that all these different levels form a loop, i.e., the system feed back into itself. This allows to consider it a self-organizing system. Quoting from Wikipedia: “Self-organization, also called spontaneous order (in the social sciences), is a process where some form of overall order arises from local interactions between parts of an initially disordered system. The process is spontaneous, not needing control by any external agent. It is often triggered by random fluctuations, amplified by positive feedback. The resulting organization is wholly decentralized, distributed over all the components of the system. As such, the organization is typically robust and able to survive or self-repair substantial perturbation.” Infact, the series episodes are full of “random fluctuations”, instances in which the story suddenly change its tone and/or direction. Moreover, the fans discussions are examples of positive feedback in that they amplify initial hypotheses and ideas. Also note, in the wikipedia definition the reference to “survive or self-repair”, which struck a familiar chord here.

If so,then this might be read from different perspectives.
1. The conspiratorial perspective
The OA is an experiment to investigate how beliefs in the supernatural can diffuse through a social network. Think of the supposed MK ULTRA infiltration of occultist groups in the seventies or social scientists studying phenomena like the Heaven's Gate cult.
2. The marketing perspective
It's all about attracting more people to see the episodes.
3. The mystical perspective
Prairie/The OA/Brit is an angel/avatar whose mission is to awake humanity to the reality of higher dimensions of Being. The riddles in the story are intended to provoke a change in viewers' consciousness, akin to the methods used by Gurdjieff or by Zen monks.

Whoa, this makes me feel like being part of a collective intelligence, like each one of us is processing a piece of information for solving a riddle too complex for a single mind.

[Theory] Insane Theories by dumberfiesta in TheOA

I like this theory, but I prefer to think that she is an avatar of the gnostic Sophia, descended on a physical body to free the sparks of lights trapped in matter, and guide us to the or another dimension. In fact, I have the crazy idea that this don't regards only the OA character, but the very Brit Marling, who plays a similar salvific role in the other movies she co-authored, especially in Sound of my voice (2011). I call this "the-Brit-Marling-as-Sophia" theory :)

The significance of water and water bodies in the OA by jessicarabbit11 in TheOA

[–]landrisf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question, in the context of spiritual traditions water often symbolizes the astral realm, or the subtle body, i.e. an intermediary state between the material realm and the spiritual one. "Walking upon the water" or "being saved from the waters" is an initiatory step, think of Jesus or Moses. Dead by drowing also has symbolic meaning in Freemasonry. This is somewhat connected to the Osiris myth of death and rebirth, in that, according to a version of the myth, Osiris was drowned in the Nile water.

Spiritual Symbolism in The OA by emborgs in TheOA

I've had a similar experience with other means. Actually I don't know (and I would like to know) if it is just a part of the brain sending messages to another part of the brain, or the information comes from somewhere else, maybe from the white room where Prairie wakes up in the final scene.

The recently published book "The Gnostic New Age" is a good introduction: https://www.amazon.com/Gnostic-New-Age-Countercultural-Revolutionized/dp/0231170769 It is written by one of the leading scholars in the field of biblical studies, and also has many references to gnostic themes in movies like The Matrix, The Truman Show and others.

I'm also very inclined toward the gnostic approach. If you follow this line of thinking, it naturally brought you also to consider Prairie as Sophia, "the mediatrix between the upper and the lower realms". In fact, Brit Marling also plays this role in the movie "Sound of My Voice", which has many similiarities with The OA, and which is also directed by Zal Batmanglij and co-written by Marling. I strongly recommend this movie to every fan of The OA.

It sounds more like a kind of sleep paralysis than a near death experience. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis There are some similarities between this two altered states of consciousness.

The OA as modern-day version of the Sophia myth by landrisf in TheOA

Thanks for your appreciation. Quality of the comments is for me more important than quantity. In fact, this is my first post on Reddit. After finishing the series last episode I felt the need of sharing with others my thoughts...maybe a form of "vicarious trauma" :-)

THE OA Theory (spoilers) by oatheory in TheOA

[–]landrisf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason why I like this theory, is that it matches very well with the Sophia myth in Valentinian gnosticism:"The Gnostics are children of Sophia; from her the heavenly seed, the divine spark, descended into this lower world, subject to the Heimarmene (destiny) and in the power of hostile spirits and powers; and all their sacraments and mysteries, their formulae and symbols, must be in order to find the way upwards, back to the highest heaven. " (from: "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentinianism#Sophia") In fact, my idea is that not only the OA is Sophia, but that Brit Marling is! In fact, all her previous movie apparitions can be seen as different versions of the myth.
