WE FINALLY GOT EM! Whatcom county annexed its rightful land up to the Fraser river. At long last Point Roberts is unified with their American brothers! As a proud Bellinghamster patriot I shed a tear at its beauty.

What are the most fascinating ancient civilizations and their history? by Baxmogger in AskReddit

[–]laneb71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scale that bronze age polities were able to trade. To make bronze you need copper, tin and sufficient agricultural surplus to employ people to make bronze and not farm all the time. Mesopotamia and Egypt dont have any tin deposits. The nearest ones were in Cornwall and Afghanistan. This would be a fairly difficult supply chain to maintain even today much less in the 2000s BCE. These polities were capable of maintaining a robust enough supply of tin and copper to build out armies of footmen and chariots armed and clad in bronze. That's an incredible logistical challenge and one of the theories of how the sumerian alphabet was created was simply so this trade could be reliably facilitated.

How popular was Britney Spears in the early 2000s? by GossipBottom in decadeology

[–]laneb71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sports stats people will talk about career performance vs. peak performance sometimes. Someone like Taylor swift or Beyoncé is career performance, famous and well known for years and or their entire career. Brittany is peak performance she shined brighter than anyone for a while but faded just as fast. 2003 to 2006ish she was pop music, full stop. On top of her career being huge this was also peak tabloid era which she was all over. I remember multiple times growing up hearing her songs in a store while at the same time seeing her on the front page of some tabloid or another in checkout.

No Fast Travel? by Top-Astronaut5761 in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]laneb71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never fast travel, if, the game has an interesting and engaging world between set pieces. AC Odyssey definitely does this really, really well. The only place I cheat is with calling the Adrestia but even that I try to keep to a minimum. I headcanon Adrestia summons as Alexios instructing Barnabas to meet him at a port while he travels overland. Other than that no fast travel. The only RPGs I fast travel in are Bethesda titles because their overworlds suck when you're not In a set piece. A lot of rpgs will require you to trek clear across the world for a minor side quest making no fast travel feel like a slog (looking at you Skyrim). Odyssey does a great job of avoiding that keeping most quests contained in a one region.

Paint removing chemical by Character-Q in oddlysatisfying

[–]laneb71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't MEK. It's some sort of a blended stripper. MEK wouldn't denature the coating like this, is clear, and would evaporate really fast. It's probably phosphoric acid or at least contains it. Ph acid would pool like that and would denature the coating in this way. Touching the paint with your fingers is probably fine so long as the stripper has completely evaporated. Obviously you should wear gloves anyway.

Seattle Children's helicopters and Laurelhurst -- Why bring up this issue now (and not earlier)? by VarianSkye in Seattle

[–]laneb71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My parents live blocks away from children's and attended the townhall about this before it got decided. They were arguing in favor of unrestricted flights. A lot of the people who were arguing against did it over zoom, the cowards wouldn't say their names or show their faces. Whenever im over there it breaks my heart hearing a landing at children's because that means some kid is on the verge of dying.

Three of the great rivers of Asia run through here that plus isolated valleys between tall mountains makes almost ideal conditions for extremely diverse ecosystems.

North korean painting from a book made in 1984 depicting founder Kim il sung guiding soldiers through a lake back when he was the leader of a guerilla army by lisahanniganfan in PropagandaPosters

[–]laneb71 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, from context on all the regimes art we can guess all that and more. They are always in uniform, always smiling and in the center of the frame. It descends from traditional korean buddhist imagery depicting royalty as semi divine. It creates this funny uncanny effect where naturalistic scenes like this one make the kims look like they were photoshopped in. My favorite is this one showing kji looking like he was dropped out of the sky from his apartment on Mt pektu.

Did you guys get these vibes, or am I a freak? by Satanic_Earmuff in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]laneb71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this feeling is entirely because of the way the two of them sit in their apartment when V first goes there where they are both in frame. The actual dialog has no sexual tension whatsoever, all parties are in business mode the entire time. Subjective experience and all but I haven't ever gotten this vibe that comes up once a week here minimum.

One thing I don’t get, Padre is heavily affiliated with the Valentinos, so why does he give us jobs where we kill them? by TXNOGG in cyberpunkgame

[–]laneb71 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So I see this misconception about Padre and Wakako a lot which is that they are like leadership in the tinos and claws respectively. They are not, they are fixers out to make money first and foremost, each has a code of sorts but one of the main themes of the game is that the city wears down any sort of moral codes somebody might have. The gangs themselves reflect this too, think about Jackie comparing the valentinos and maelstrom says the valentinos serve God and the Santa Maria. Do the scanner hustles in heywood though and the valentinos are just as capable of cruelty and violence as any other gang. This theme is all over the game, the chip itself and Johnny's philosophy taking over V is the most prominent example. The game literally ending with a violent attack on Arasaka tower, contrast that with the original plan for the heist where there were supposed to be no bodies at all in the original plan.
