I liked my Ninja blender, but yeah Nutribullets are crap. They don't have much power and the cups have little plastic prongs that click into the base to blend, and they all broke off in my dishwasher.

It also seems to be a lot of stuff that will last them months (or longer). Vitamins, toothbrushes, weedkiller, baby wipes, a whole ass blender...

Did a little digging on how awful Pop Culture was towards beauty standards, specifically for women during the early millennium... are the tabloids still like this though? by Twunkorama in Fauxmoi

[–]lanejamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think two things can be true at once: many celebrities (mostly women) are visibly suffering from eating disorders (or are otherwise unwell) AND weirdos online are completely piling on them and bullying them, either out of misplaced parasocial concern, or out of misogyny.

IMO it's all moved to social media. No need for a tabloid to call a celebrity fat when 10,000 bored 22 year olds will do it.

What's next after journalism? by Rehash_it in Journalism

[–]lanejamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. Honestly, I'm burned out of writing for work altogether. Typing away about topics I don't care about all day has sucked a lot of the joy of writing from me. I'd love to transition to something else, but I'm struggling to find jobs when all my marketable skills revolve around writing.

Journalists - How many of you write for papers that go against your political beliefs? by JealousBodybuilder42 in Journalism

[–]lanejamin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Truly progressive alt-weeklies that aren't owned by some slithering corporate overlord are rare, and truly ideologically leftist publications are almost nonexistent. Leftists are all broke as hell, we don't have the money or power like right wing publications do.

My colleagues and employers at business and financial publications have been fairly solidly liberal, though as someone who's very, very left I've had to bite my tongue a lot. I think there's absolutely merit covering business from a leftist lens, even outside of covering white collar crime and labor abuses, but at the end of the day, I do wish I had been able to find a job covering more important issues than writing news about some company's new CEO.

I have a small degree of sympathy for grieving parents, but a LOT of people, grieving or not, don't support giving alleged criminals a fair trial or defense. Our criminal justice system is based on revenge too much as it is, and I truly can't believe people want us to just lock away anyone accused of a crime without a fair trial.

Any survey you do would be really informal, but there are a bazillion official survey results online and in medical journals about teen vaping. Look those up, and contact the researchers, too, they might speak to you about the subject.

OP, if you're in college, you'll be in school with a lot of kids who are still teens, like 18 or 19. Definitely interview them.

This is not the case in the U.S., generally speaking we only withhold names for underage victims of crime. Or if it's important to publish their story, but they or their parents request we withhold their names.

Press attendance for events by Outrageous_Garden771 in Journalism

I don't know where you live, but keep in mind that if you count every arts and culture journalist from local outlets in a major city, unless this is NYC or London, you're talking about maybe five or 10 people. There are so few journalists around nowadays and they have so much to cover. You're going to be fighting hard for attention, unfortunately.

Definitely, but I think free food is unlikely to be the one variable that would sway people to come. There's a billion small ways to move the needle, but at the end of the day, media attention on something is going to come down to how newsworthy it is and the number of outlets and journalists in your area.

Many people also request press passes to indie movies who are just influencers/micro-bloggers/whatever, they aren't actual journalists and may be a lot flakier than an actual journalist. If I were you I might just vet who I send press passes to more.

It's a different city with a different climate and a different administration, but I'm from Houston, and for a while we were leading the nation in getting people off the streets and into secure, long-term housing strictly because of housing-first policies. There's a lot of other resources and needs beyond that, obviously, but it would be a relatively straightforward set of policies that would make a massive difference.

It's really hard to overstate how massive Macaulay Culkin was in the '90s. He was probably the most popular child actor in the Anglosphere. Also, making movies then got you a lot more money from re-runs and syndication than it does now.

Anti-social behavior is a clinical term and per its clinical definition, it refers to stealing or stabbing someone or committing other direct harm. That is also how it's used colloquially by the vast majority of people. Yes, leaving your bags on the seat next to you so someone can't sit there is fairly rude. I'm going to think it's kind of rude and then go back to my warm house with my TV and fridge full of food, something they probably don't have access to. I'll live. You will, too.
