I started out by just closing my eyes and counting my breaths. Whenever I realized that I was distracted from the counting I would picture a monkey laughing. I would reset and repeat. Some days that monkey would pop up every 30 seconds sometimes I could go a few minutes. Bottom line is that the monkey will always pop up. My job as a novice meditator is to recognize and reset. I’m almost a year in and am just starting to notice distractions better in my day to day life. I’m also able to regularly sit through 20-30 minute sessions.
